TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Augustana senior Jonathan Smith (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) capped off a tremendous senior season in cross country by earning All-American honors at the NCAA Division III national meet on Saturday, November 17 in Terre Haute, Indiana. Smith, the lone Viking qualifier in the national meet, covered the 8,000 meter LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course in an official time of 25:04.4 and placed 34th.

The race was won by Tim Nelson of Wisconsin-Stout with a time of 24:26.8. The top 35 individual finishers earn All-American recognition.

Smith becomes the 25th All-American in Augustana history with his fine performance on Saturday under ideal running conditions. The last Viking to earn All-American honors was Matt Bowman in 2010 and, ironically, he also finished in 32nd place at the national meet, which was held in Waverly, Iowa.

Smith qualified for the national meet by placing 15th in the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional meet on Saturday, November 10 in Winneconne, Wisconsin. He was the Vikings' top finisher in all eight of the meets he competed in this season. He was fifth in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin on October 27 in Wheaton, Illinois and earlier this year he had a fifth place finish at the Brissman-Lundeen Invitational on September 21 and a seventh at the Pre-National Meet on October 6 on this same Lavern Gibson layout.
