Augustana freshman Meredith Chew (Paradise Valley HS, Phoenix, Ariz.) was named the "Player of the Week" in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin for the second time in the 2012 season. The season-long starter at goalkeeper was instrumental last week as the Vikings won a pair of contests and clinched the second CCIW title for Augustana in the last four years.
The Vikings, now 15-3 overall and 7-0 in the CCIW, defeated Wheaton 1-0 on Wednesday, October 24 to clinch the title and then came back on Saturday, October 27 to beat Elmhurst 3-2 and put the capper on an undefeated league campaign. Augustana is currently ranked 14th in NCAA Division III by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and will host a semi-final round in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin tournament on Wednesday, October 31 at 7:00 p.m. against North Central.
Chew had quite a week as she recorded five saves in the 1-0 win at 14th ranked Wheaton on Wednesday and then came back with 10 saves in the 3-2 win at Elmhurst. She has started all 18 games for the Vikings this season and has logged a total of 1,604 minutes while giving up 17 goals for a 0.95 goals-against-average. She has 76 saves with five shutouts and a 15-3-0 overall record.
She was named the CCIW "Player of the Week" back on September 11 and is the third Viking to win the honor this season. Senior Taylor Moesle (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) won the honor on October 23 and freshman Kelly Farell (St. Ursula Academy, Sylvania, Ohio) won it twice - on October 16 and October 2.
Chew, a pre-dentistry major, is the daughter of Wyck and Deanna Chew of Phoenix, Arizona.
