13th ranked Vikings win Brissman-Lundeen

ROCK ISLAND, Illinois - The 13th ranked Augustana men's cross country team put together an outstanding outing in winning the Brissman-Lundeen Invitational on Friday, September 21 at Saukie Golf Course in Rock Island, Illinois. Veteran head coach Paul Olsen watched as his top five runners all finished in the top 15 individually to lead the Vikings to a narrow 27-38 win over 24th ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
Grinnell, ranked 10th in the NCAA Division III West Region, placed third with 146 points while Loras, rated 21st nationally, was fourth with 146. NAIA power Olivet Nazarene took fifth with 220. St. Norbert (231), St. Ambrose (233), Goshen (300), Carroll (325) and Aurora (363) rounded out the top 10 in the 34 team field.
For Augustana, there was just a 30 second difference between first man Jonathan Smith (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) and fifth runner Tyler Busch (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.). Smith led the Vikings with an overall finish of fourth (second in the team standings) and a time of 25:17.2. Dan Sullivan of Wisconsin-Stevens Point won the individual race with a time of 25:06.9 over 8000 meters. Dylan Creger and Mitchell Dale were second (25:09.6) and third (25:16.4) respectively but both were competing unattached.
Senior Brian Pollastrini (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) chased Smith into the finish chute, taking fifth overall and third in team scoring, with a time of 25:25.0. Senior Justin Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) ran 25:32.1 and was seventh/fifth. Freshman Keith Sands (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) was eighth/sixth with a time of 25:33.6 and Busch finished 14th/11th in 25:47.5.
Senior Nathan Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) was 16th/13th in 25:51.5 and freshman Dan Popek (Minooka HS, Minooka, Ill.) was 30th/27th in 26:10.9.
Augustana will compete next at the pre-national meet on October 6 in Terre Haute, Indiana.
