Jones romps to victory at Brissman-Lundeen

Senior Sarahbeth Jones was all alone at the finish line in the Brissman-Lundeen Invitational on Friday, September 21 at Saukie Golf Course, winning by 37 seconds with a time of 21:40.8.

ROCK ISLAND, Illinois - Senior Sarahbeth Jones (Warren Township HS, Wadsworth, Ill.) obliterated the field at the Brissman-Lundeen Invitational on Friday, September 21 at Saukie Golf Course in Rock Island, Illinois. Jones grabbed the lead early in the race and had a 10 second lead at 2000 meter mark en route to finishing the 6000 meter course with a time of 21:40.8. Jones' effort helped lead Augustana to a third place finish in the team standings of the 32 team field.

She led by 18 seconds at 3000 meters and increased it to 33 seconds by the 5000 meter mark. Her final margin of victory was 37 seconds of runner-up Karen Grauel (22:17.9) of Truman State. This was just Jones' second race of the season and it came after an impressive fifth place finish at the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships last Friday in Normal, Illinois.

Olivet Nazarene won the team title with 53 points while Wisconsin-Stevens Point was second with 103. Augustana, ranked sixth in the latest NCAA Division III Midwest Regional poll, finished third with 125 points. Grinnell was fourth (150) and Monmouth (177) took fifth. St. Norbert (194), Truman State (207), St. Ambrose (273), Aurora (304) and Loras (351) rounded out the top 10.

While Jones was winning the race by a wide margin, the split between the Vikings' second and fifth finishers was a mere 19 seconds. Junior Kate Benge (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) was the second finisher for Augustana, taking 22nd with a time of 23:20.1. Senior Kirstillyn Pohlman (Zion-Benton HS, Winthrop Harbor, Ill.) placed 33rd in 23:32.2 and junior Kristyn Barton (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) took 34th in 23:35.

Sophomore Jessica Bacon (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) was 38th in 23:39.1 and senior Tara Bistry (Joliet Catholic HS, Shorewood, Ill.) placed 39th in 23:39.3. The seventh runner for veteran head coach Fred Whiteside's team was junior Kelsey Stockert (Peoria Notre Dame HS, Mapleton, Ill.) in 60th place with a time of 24:06.6.

Augustana's next meet will be September 28 at the DuPage Invitational in Wheaton, Illinois at St. James Farm.
