Late goal by Nelson gives Vikings first win

Freshman Patrick Nelson scored the game winning goal for the Vikings with less than four minutes remaining in Augustana's 2-1 victory over Lawrence in the St. Mary's Classic in Winona, Minnesota on Saturday, September 8.

WINONA, Minn. - A goal late in the second half by freshman Patrick Nelson (Jacksonville HS, Jacksonville, Ill.) helped lift Augustana to a 2-1 victory over Lawrence on Saturday, September 8 at the St. Mary's Classic in Winona, Minnesota. Nelson scored with less than four minutes on the clock to give the Vikings their first win of 2012 after two straight defeats to open the season.

Nelson tallied with just 3:03 left in the game thanks to an assist by junior Matt Shipon (South Elgin HS, Elgin, Ill.). It was the second goal of the season for Nelson.

Augustana had to battle back from a 1-0 deficit at halftime. David Caprile of Lawrence scored at 43:05 of the first half on a penalty kick to give the Vikings from Appleton, Wisconsin a 1-0 lead at intermission.

Augustana tied the contest at 76:59 when sophomore Josh Bennett (Wheaton North HS, Winfield, Ill.) scored with an assist going to junior Michael Buric (Notre Dame Prep, Scottsdale, Ariz.).

Brenton Joseph's Vikings dominated the game statistically, outshooting Lawrence 26-5, including a whopping 17-2 margin in the second half alone.

Junior Tyler Cowherd (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) went the distance in goal and picked up the victory. He was only called upon to make one save.

Augustana, now 1-2 on the year, will play Concordia of River Forest on Sunday, September 9 at 12:00 noon in Winona.
