Vikings fall 4-1 to Calvin

Freshman Brett Johnson went the distance in goal in Augustana's 4-1 loss to Calvin Friday in Bloomoington, Ill.

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Defending national runner-up Calvin scored twice in the first 10:12 of the match and went on to a 4-1 win over Augustana Friday night. The neutral-site game was played at Illinois Wesleyan University.

The Knights' Joe Broekhuisen scored on a 20-yard free kick seven minutes in for a 1-0 Calvin lead. In the 11th minute, Ben Honeycutt made it 2-0 with an assist from Zach Willis' corner kick. Broekhuisen and Travis Vegter worked a give-and go in the 25th minute with the former getting his second goal of the night and the latter the assist. The half ended with Calvin on top 3-0.

Freshman Patrick Nelson (Jacksonville HS, Jacksonville, Ill.) got the Vikings on the board early in the second half when he put a header past Knight keeper Jared Rushlau. Nelson's classmate, Cole Collins (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) was credited with the assist.

Willis' unassisted goal in the 62nd minute accounted for the final.

Sophomore Brett Johnson (Zion-Benton HS, Beach Park, Ill.) went the distance in goal for Augustana, recording three saves.

Calvin outshot the Vikings 17-9, including a 7-2 edge in shots on goal. Augustana had a 5-4 advantage in corners.

Coach Brenton Joseph's Viking club is on the road again on September 4, traveling to Pella, Iowa for a matchup with Central at 5:00 p.m.
