Men's soccer sixth in preseason poll

Senior Jason Beckus and his Viking teammates are pegged for sixth in the CCIW preseason coaches' poll. The Vikings finished last year 13-6-0 and 3-4 in CCIW play.

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – The College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin has released its pre-season coaches' poll for men's soccer with coach Brenton Joseph's Augustana squad picked for sixth place. Defending regular season champion Carthage and runner-up North Park were selected as co-favorites, with each getting 43 points and three first-place votes in the poll.

Wheaton received the other two first place votes and 40 points to finish third. Illinois Wesleyan was pegged for fourth with 30 points followed by Elmhurst with 26 points. Augustana's 18 points put it in the sixth spot, followed by North Central (17) and Millikin (7).

Joseph, entering his sixth season as head coach of the Vikings, will welcome back 17 letter winners and eight starters from last year's squad. Augustana was 13-6-0 a year ago, but finished 3-4 in the CCIW, good for sixth place. Junior Michael Buric (Notre Dame Prep, Scottsdale, Ariz.) returns after being named second team All-CCIW a year ago. Other notable returnees for the Vikings include seniors Jason Beckus (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) and Nick Wolfe (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) , juniors Tyler Cowherd (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) , Evan Johnson (Glenbard South HS, Glen Ellyn, Ill.) , John McSpadden (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) , and Matt Shipon (South Elgin HS, Elgin, Ill.) and sophomore Nathan Kyes (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) .
