2012 Season - Two school records fall in Norse Relays win

Sophomore Kierra Smith won both hurdle races and ran a leg on the winning 1600 relay team as Augustana scored a convincing victory at the Norse Relays on Saturday, April 14 in Decorah, Iowa.

DECORAH, Iowa - A pair of school records and six event winners helped lead Augustana to an impressive victory at the Norse Relays on Saturday, April 14 in Decorah, Iowa. The Vikings of veteran head coach Fred Whiteside ran away with the team title, totaling 213.50 points to easily outdistance the seven team field.

Augustana scored 213.50 points to defeat runner-up Luther (173.50) by 40 points. Hamline was third with 167 and Concordia-St. Paul took fourth with 80. St. Mary's of Minnesota placed fifth with 39 and the Luther Alumni scored nine points in sixth. Augsburg was seventh with six points.

One of the new school records came in a relay and the other in a field event. The 4x1600 relay team of sophomore Kate Benge (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa), junior Annie Heifner (Oregon HS, Oregon, Ill.), junior Sarahbeth Jones (Warren Township HS, Wadsworth, Ill.) and freshman Jessica Bacon (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) captured the event with a time of 21:07.93. Not only was that a winner, but it erased the Augustana school record of 21:16.07 set in 2002 by the team of Christina Gamzer, Jennifer Smith, Annie Livengood and Melanie Round.

The other school record came in the hammer throw where sophomore Liana Beauchamp (Genoa-Kingston HS, Kingston, Ill.) unleashed a toss of 155' 8" to finish third. That took down the previous mark of 154' 9" by Paula Neiweem in 2009. Beauchamp was also fourth in the shot put with a heave of 39' 8 ¾".

Sophomore Kierra Smith (Creston HS, Creston, Iowa) won two individual events and ran a leg on a winning relay. She won the 100 hurdles in :15.50 and the 400 hurdles in 1:04.30. She handled the second leg on the victorious 1600 relay team that finished with a time of 4:06.70. She was joined by Benge, sophomore Johanna Schnitzler (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.) and freshman Krista McCurrie (Stagg HS, Palos Park, Ill.).

Freshman Astin Moravek (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Riverside, Ill.) won the triple jump with a leap of 34' 8 ¼" and placed second in the long jump at 16' 7 ¾". The Vikings placed a total of six people in the event and scored 27 points. Junior Samantha Bazely (Rock Island Alleman HS, Coal Valley, Ill.) was third at 33' 1 ¾". Freshman Laura Polizzi (Crystal Lake South HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) placed fourth at 32' 7" and freshman Veronica Bertellotti (Prospect HS, Prospect, Ill.) was sixth at 30' 6 ¼". Freshman Taylor Mills (Glenbard South HS, Glen Ellyn, Ill.) jumped 30' 4 ¾" for seventh and freshman Shannon Leyva (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) recorded a mark of 30' 0" in eighth place.

Senior Catherine Foreman (St. Joseph-Ogden HS, St. Joseph, Ill.) won the javelin with a throw of 115' 3".

Junior Tara Bistry (Joliet Catholic HS, Shorewood, Ill.) finished second in the 10,000 with a time of 42:10.25 and freshman Rachel Kelly (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) was fourth in 43:38.90. Sophomore Kristen Whiteside (Zion-Benton HS, Winthrop Harbor, Ill.) was second in the 3000 steeplechase in 12:38.99 and sophomore Amanda Pease (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) took fourth in 13:01.27.

The 3200 relay team of Jones, Heifner, Bacon and freshman Lorraine Stamberger (LaMoille HS, LaMoille, Ill.) placed second in 9:49.55 and the 1600 sprint medley unit of senior Morgan Gale (Oregon HS, Oregon, Ill.), senior Rachael Latham (Burlington Central HS, Elgin, Ill.), McCurrie and Stamberger took second in 4:26.86.

Schnitzler was third in the 100 hurdles (:16.70) and high jump (4' 9 ¾"). The 800 relay team of Gale, Moravek, McCurrie and Foreman was third in 1:51.82. Bazely took fourth in the long jump with a leap of 15' 6 ¾" and sophomore Julia Popp (Rockford Boylan Catholic HS, Belvidere, Ill.) was fourth in the high jump at 4' 7 ¾" and seventh in the javelin with a toss of 93' 3". Junior Jordan Mauerman (Albany HS, Albany, Wis.) was fourth in the javelin at 106' 2" and seventh in the long jump with a mark of 14' 3".

The 400 relay team of Gale, Moravek, Schnitzler and Polizzi placed fifth in :54.55 and Gale was fifth in the pole vault with a clearance of 8' 11 ½". Senior Amber Gruber (Rolling Meadows HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) placed fifth in the hammer throw at 133' 2" and junior Bethany Siwek (Woodstock HS, Woodstock, Ill.) was sixth with a toss of 132' 0".
