2012 Season - Augustana wins four events at Viking Olympics

Sophomore Kierra Smith won the 100 hurdles and placed second in the 400 hurdles on the second day of the Viking Olympics on Saturday, March 31.

Augustana won four events at the Viking Olympics on Friday and Saturday, March 30-31 and finished second in the team standings to NCAA Division III national indoor champion Wartburg. The Vikings of veteran head coach Fred Whiteside scored 198 points, trailing only the Knights' winning total of 326.50 in the seven team field. St. Ambrose was a close third with 178 points while Loras (155), Ashford (66.5), Dubuque (43) and Iowa Wesleyan (6) rounded out the scoring.

Sophomore Taelar Hillyer (Rock Island Alleman HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) took the pole vault on Friday with a clearance of 11' 2 ¼". Also winning on Friday was the distance medley team of freshman Jessica Bacon (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.), sophomore Kierra Smith (Creston HS, Creston, Iowa), sophomore Kate Benge (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) and junior Sarahbeth Jones (Warren Township HS, Wadsworth, Ill.). That foursome turned in a time of 12:24.79.

Picking up wins on Saturday were Smith in the 100 hurdles in :15.48 and freshman Astin Moravek (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Riverside, Ill.) in the long jump with a leap of 16' 10".

Augustana will compete in the Wartburg Select Invitational on Friday, April 6 in Waverly, Iowa.

Day Two - Moravek and Smith post wins as Vikings finish second to NCAA champion Wartburg

Sophomore Kierra Smith (Creston HS, Creston, Iowa) and freshman Astin Moravek (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Riverside, Ill.) picked up individual victories on the second day of competition at the Viking Olympics on Saturday, March 31 at Paul V. Olsen Track. Those victories helped Augustana place second in the team standings with 198 points, trailing only NCAA Division III indoor champion Wartburg, which scored 326.5.

Smith won the 100 hurdles in :15.48 and placed second in the 400 intermediate hurdles in 1:04.09. Moravek won the long jump with a leap of 16' 10" and finished fifth in the triple jump at 34' 11 ¼".

Junior Sarahbeth Jones (Warren Township HS, Wadsworth, Ill.) was second in the 800 in 2:23.47 and third in the 1500 in 4:44.92. Junior Jennifer Prazak (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.) took third in the 800 in 2:25.24 with junior Annie Heifner (Oregon HS, Oregon, Wis.) placing fourth in 2:25.52.

Sophomore Liana Beauchamp (Genoa-Kingston HS, Kingston, Ill.) was second in the hammer throw with a toss of 142' 9". Freshman Stephanie Burbidge (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) placed second in the 5000 in 19:02.96. Sophomore Johanna Schnitzler (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.) was third in the heptathlon with 3,615 points and sophomore Julia Popp (Rockford Boylan HS, Belvidere, Ill.) took fifth with 3,267.

The 400 relay team was second in :52.61 and the 1600 relay unit was second in 4:06.84.

Day One - Hillyer's win in pole vault helps Vikings take narrow one-point lead after first day of Viking Olympics

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Sophomore Taelar Hillyer (Rock Island Alleman HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) won the pole vault to help Augustana to a narrow one-point lead in the Viking Olympics on Friday, March 30 at Paul V. Olsen Track. After eight events, the Vikings lead the seven-team meet with 70 points, just one digit ahead of St. Ambrose's second place total of 69. Wartburg is third with 58 while Loras (53), Ashford (15), Dubuque (8) and Iowa Wesleyan (1) rounded out the field.

Hillyer soared of 11' 2 ¼" on her second attempt to win the pole vault by over a foot. While she was the lone individual winner for veteran head coach Fred Whiteside's Vikings on the first day, Augustana did pick up a victory in the distance medley with a time of 12:24.79. That team was freshman Jessica Bacon (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.), sophomore Kierra Smith (Creston HS, Creston, Iowa), sophomore Kate Benge (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) and junior Sarahbeth Jones (Warren Township HS, Wadsworth, Ill.). The Vikings got a second from the 800 meter relay team of senior Morgan Gale (Oregon HS, Oregon, Ill.), freshman Astin Moravek (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Riverside, Ill.), freshman Krista McCurrie (Stagg HS, Palos Heights, Ill.) and senior Catherine Foreman (St. Joseph-Ogden HS, St. Joseph, Ill.) with a clocking of 1:59.13 and a third in the 3200 relay in 10:12.42. The 3200 relay was junior Jennifer Prazak (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.), junior Annie Heifner (Oregon HS, Oregon, Wis.), sophomore Kelsey Moon (Mundelein HS, Wauconda, Ill.) and senior Sarah Johnson (Grayslake North HS, Lake Villa, Ill.).

Augustana had three runners in the top five in the 3000 meter steeplechase. Sophomore Kristen Whiteside (Zion-Benton HS, Winthrop Harbor, Ill.) took second in 12:16.51 with sophomore Kelsey Stockert (Peoria Notre Dame HS, Mapleton, Ill.) grabbing fourth in 12:21.76 and freshman Kris Bowen (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.) nailing down fifth in 12:24.53.

Foreman was third in the javelin with a toss of 113' 9" and junior Jordan Mauerman (Albany HS, Albany, Wis.) took fifth in 107' 11".
