2012 Season - Behnke leads Vikings to two wins in St. Louis
|Freshman outfielder Laura Behnke had a big day Saturday, driving in the winning run in the Vikings' 3-2 win over Washington and tripling in the team's second run in a 2-1 win over Fontbonne.|
ST. LOUIS, Missouri-Freshman Laura Behnke (Wheaton St. Francis HS, Roselle, Ill.) came up big in both of Augustana's games Saturday. First, she drove in the winning run with an eighth-inning sacrifice fly in a 3-2 win over Washington. In the team's second game of the day, she knocked in the eventual deciding run with a two-out triple in the top of the seventh as the Vikings defeated Fontbonne 2-1.
AUGUSTANA 3, WASHINGTON 2 (8)
A sacrifice fly off the bat of freshman leftfielder Laura Behnke (Wheaton St. Francis HS, Roselle, Ill.) drove in sophomore pitcher Sarah Hintz (LeRoy HS, LeRoy, Ill.) with the winning run as Augustana defeated Washington 3-2 on Saturday, March 24 in St. Louis, Missouri. The win came in the first game of the Washington Softball Invitational and it moved the Vikings' record to 9-2 on the season.
The game was tied after seven innings and the two teams played the international tie-breaker in the eighth. That means the player that made the last out of the previous (seventh) inning was placed on second base to start the eighth.
Washington was the visitor and Hintz, who ran her record to 7-0 by tossing a complete game, struck out a pair of Bears and got another to fly out. That kept Washington off the board and set up the Vikings in the bottom of the eighth. Hintz made the last out in the seventh so she went to second base and Jillian Gibbs (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) advanced her to third with a sacrifice bunt. Behnke was the next hitter and she lifted a fly ball to left field off Bear starter Olivia Cook that was deep enough to allow Hintz to score with the winning run.
Hintz allowed six hits while striking out five and walking two as she kept her record perfect at 7-0. She allowed a home run in the second to Washington's Maggie Mullen and gave up another run in the fifth when Bear shortstop Alyssa Wilson tripled down the right field line with two outs and scored on a single by center fielder Ashley Janssen.
Augustana got a run in the fourth when senior right fielder Dawn Kernich (Mt. Olive HS, Mt. Olive, Ill.) walked to lead off. She went to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore shortstop Krista Watson (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) and scored on a double by sophomore first baseman Courtney Ledezema (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.).
The Vikings' second run came in the sixth when Behnke led off the inning with a single to center, went to second on a sacrifice, third on a ground out and scored on a single to right by Watson.
AUGUSTANA 2, FONTBONNE 1
Freshmen Christie Wiersema (Morrison HS, Morrison, Ill.) and Laura Behnke (Wheaton St. Francis HS, Roselle, Ill.) came through with huge seventh-inning hits Saturday to propel Augustana to a 2-1 win over Fontbonne at the Washington University Softball Invitational. With the win, the Vikings improve to 10-2 on the year.
After six scoreless innings, Wiersema led off the top of the seventh with a home run to left center. The blast was her team-high third of the season and gave the Vikings a 1-0 lead. One out later, sophomore Chaney Tambling (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) reached on an infield hit. Freshman Jaclyn Wrona (Glenbard South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) hit into a fielder's choice, but came around to score on Behnke's two-out, RBI triple to right, extending the lead to 2-0.
Augustana starter Courtney Ledezma (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.), who had allowed just two hits through six innings, gave up a run to the Griffins in the bottom of the seventh, but hung on for the win, evening her record at 2-2 this year.
Wrona, who had a pair of singles, was the only Viking with multiple hits in the game. No Fontbonne player had more than one hit as Ledezma limited the Griffins to just three total.
