2012 Season - Vikings are 22nd in final women's poll

Kierra Smith ran a leg on the Vikings' winning distance medley relay team at the CCIW championships. Augustana finished the indoor season ranked 22nd in NCAA in the dual meet power ranking.

ROCK ISLAND, Illinois – Despite raising their point total by four points from the previous poll, the Augustana Vikings fell to 22 nd in the final edition of the NCAA Division III indoor dual meet rankings in women’s track & field. The Vikings garnered 128.86 points in the latest poll, up from 124.51 two weeks ago. Augustana had been ranked 20th for consecutive weeks before the latest poll.

This poll, conducted by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, quantifies the depth of each team. The team’s total score is the sum of all points earned in each event. Two individual athletes are scored per event, as well as one relay team. The points are based on the best marks of an event in the current season, with the faster times and greater distances worth more.

Wartburg College took over the top spot in the rankings, racking up 162.03 points. Wisconsin-Oshkosh was second in 160.60; while UW-La Crosse was third with 152.16 Massachusetts Institute of Technology fell three spots to fourth (151.41), while North Central (150.91) rounded out the top five.

Veteran head Coach Fred Whiteside’s squad completed its indoor season on February 24 and 25 at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) championships in Naperville, Illinois. The Vikings finished sixth overall at the meet with 54 points, which was won by Illinois Wesleyan with 163 points. The Titans held off the host North Central Cardinals by two points to capture the indoor CCIW crown. Augustana’s performance was spurred by a superb showing from junior Sarahbeth Jones (Warren Township HS, Wadsworth, Ill.) . On the first day of the conference championships, Jones anchored the distance medley relay team to victory in the mile leg. The following day, Jones won the 3,000 meter race with a time of 10:21.38 and returned a short time later to place third in the mile with an effort of 5:01.91.

Other Vikings that performed well at the conference meet include Kate Benge (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa), who was fifth in the 800 in 2:19.35. Sophomore Johanna Schnitzler (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.) placed sixth in the pentathlon with 2,855 points and seventh in the high jump with a clearance of 5' 0 ¼". Sophomore Kierra Smith (Creston HS, Creston, Iowa) was sixth in the 60 hurdles and sophomore Liana Beauchamp (Genoa-Kingston HS, Kingston, Ill.) placed eighth in the shot put with a toss of 37' 3 ¼".

Joining North Central and Augustana in the top 25 from the CCIW are the 16th ranked Illinois Wesleyan Titans (136.08) and the 17th ranked Carthage Red (135.56).

Augustana competed in seven meets during the indoor season and the Vikings have second place finishes in the Dubuque Invitational on January 14, the Wartburg Lutheran Invitational on January 28 and the Augustana Invitational on January 16. They were third at the Illinois College Invitational on February 4. The Vikings rose as high as 10th in the dual meet power rankings during the course of the year.

The team will open up the outdoor portion of their schedule on March 17 at home with the “Early Spring Opener.” The Vikings will compete at home for three consecutive weeks to begin outdoor before they travel to the Wartburg Select Meet in Waverly, Iowa on April 6.
