2012 Season - Vikings ranked sixth heading into CCIW meet

Senior hurdler Greg Davis will help lead sixth ranked Augustana into the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin indoor track & field championship this weekend in Naperville, Illinois.

ROCK ISLAND, Illinois – Augustana will head into the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin men’s indoor track & field championship this weekend ranked sixth in NCAA Division III. The Vikings, who have been in the top five all season, slipped one notch from fifth this week in the Indoor Dual Meet Rankings. They increased their point total for the fifth consecutive week, moving up to 152.38 this week, up from 148.76 a week ago.

The Vikings easily won the Dubuque Invitational on Saturday, February 18 with 243.5 points, which tripled the point total of second place Carroll. This week veteran head coach Paul Olsen will send his team into the CCIW championship that will feature four teams ranked in the top 20 in the latest national poll. North Central, the defending conference champion, is currently ranked third while Augustana is sixth, Illinois Wesleyan is 11 th and Carthage is 19 th.

This poll, conducted by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, quantifies the depth of each team. The team’s total score is the sum of all points earned in each event. Two individual athletes are scored per event, as well as one relay team. The points are based on the best marks of an event in the current season, with the faster times and farther distances worth more.

The number one ranked team in the country is Wisconsin-LaCrosse with 164.11 points while Wisconsin-Eau Claire is second with 160.51. North Central has 159.94 points in third and Bates is in fourth with 153.82. Wisconsin-Whitewater is in fifth, just ahead of Augustana, with 152.56. Rounding out the top 10 are Tufts (151.23), M.I.T. (145.95), Wisconsin-Platteville (145.67) and Wisconsin-Stout (144.20).

Veteran head coach Paul Olsen’s team has been busy this season, competing in eight different meets. The Vikings have victories in the Spartan Invitational on January 14, the Wartburg Lutheran Triangular on January 28 and Dubuque Invitational last week. They were fifth at the Wisconsin-Whitewater Invitational on February 3 and fourth at the Darren Young Classic on February 11.
