2012 Season - Two school records fall at Dubuque

Freshman Jeff Padesky won the pole vault at the Dubuque Invitational on Saturday, February 18. The pole vault was one of 10 events the fifth ranked Vikings won as they easily won the team title in the final tune-up before the CCIW Indoor Championships on February 24-25.

DUBUQUE, Iowa - In a final tune-up for the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship meet next weekend, Augustana put on quite a show at the Dubuque Invitational on Saturday, February 18 in Dubuque, Iowa. The Vikings easily won the team title in the 12-team meet and broke a pair of school records in the process.

Veteran head coach Paul Olsen's team, currently ranked fifth in the latest NCAA Division III national dual meet power ranking, totaled 243.5 points, more than three times the score of runner-up Carroll, which had 74 in second place. Dubuque (65), Loras (61) and Ashford (59) rounded out the top five in the team standings. The rest of the field looked like this: Beloit (32.5), Cornell (31), Knox (26), Clarke (23), Iowa Wesleyan (18), St. Mary's (13) and Viterbo (5).

Senior Brian Benning (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) set new school and field house records in winning the 35 pound weight throw with a toss of 60' 3 ¾". His senior teammate, Phil Christensen (Kaneland HS, Maple Park, Ill.) was second with a mark of 58' 11 ¼", which was also better than the field house record. That record belonged to former Viking standout Darin Decker from 2010.

The other school record came in the 800 relay when the team of freshman Keith Cline (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.), sophomore Jay Graffagna (Geneva HS, LaFox, Ill.), junior Floyd Mays (Mooseheart HS, Justice, Ill.) and freshman David Voland (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) won with a time of 1:30.04. That broke the old Augustana school record of 1:31.25 held by the 1996 unit of Dave Walton, Kyle Poston, Mark Zemke and Scott Tumilty. The mark turned in was also a Dubuque field house record.

The Vikings won a total of 10 events on the day. The 1600 relay of Voland, sophomore Steve Zahrobsky (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.), senior Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.) and junior Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) captured first place with a time of 3:23.33.
