2012 Season - Men's Track & Field now third in NCAA poll

Senior Brian Benning has the top throw for the Vikings in the 35 pound weight throw so far this season. He recorded a mark of 58' 7 1/4" on Friday, February 3 at the Whitewater Invitational. Augustana is currently ranked third in the latest NCAA Division III dual meet ranking.

Strong performances all around helped the Augustana men’s team stay in the top three in the nation in the NCAA Division III track and field dual meet rankings. The Vikings were fifth at the Converse Invitational held at University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on February 3rd that included the top three ranked teams nationally. In the dual meet rankings, the Vikings increased their point total to 147.37, up from 142.73 last week, however they dropped to third.

This poll, conducted by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, quantifies the depth of each team. The team’s total score is the sum of all points earned in each event. Two individual athletes are scored per event, as well as one relay team. The points are based on the best marks of an event in the current season, with the faster times and farther distances worth more.

College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin rival North Central is still in the first position with 160.17 points. Wisconsin-Whitewater leapfrogged the Vikings, accumulating 149.52 points to jump into second. Wisconsin-Platteville, after not appearing in the top ten teams last week, has moved all the way up to fourth with 143.90 points. A trio of New England region schools occupies the next three spots. Bates is fifth with 142.95 points; Massachusetts Institute of Technology is sixth with 141.34 points while Tufts is seventh with 141.24 points. Fellow CCIW rival Illinois Wesleyan is eighth with 140.95, while Nebraska Wesleyan (137.47) and Wabash (135.70) round out the top ten.

Veteran head coach Paul Olsen’s team has competed in five meets this season. The Vikings hosted an Intra-squad meet on January 6th, where no team scores were kept. Augustana then traveled to Dubuque, Iowa on January 14th where it finished first of nine teams in the Sol Butler Classic. On January 21st, the Vikings won 11 events at the Midwest Invitational at Monmouth College but no team scores were kept. The Vikings won 11 more events at the Wartburg Lutheran Triangular on January 28th hosted by Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, and won the three-team competition. This past weekend the Vikings competed in the Converse Invitational held at University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, placing fifth.

The Vikings will host Augustana Open on Saturday, February 11 at the PepsiCo Center, beginning at 11:00 a.m .
