2012 Season - Vikings easily win Sol Butler Classic

DUBUQUE, Iowa - In the opening meet of the 2012 indoor season, the Augustana men's track & field team put on an impressive display of depth and balance in winning the Sol Butler Classic on Saturday, January 14 in Dubuque, Iowa. The Vikings scored 236.50 points to nearly double the score of second place Monmouth and easily win the nine-team event.
While veteran head coach Paul Olsen's team was piling up 236.50 points, Monmouth was second with 130 and Dubuque was a distant third with 71.50. William Penn (71), Edgewood (34), Mount Mercy (29), Loras (26), Clarke (22) and Coe (15) rounded out the field.
Augustana won two individual events and two relays and scored in every event. There was only one event, the 5000, where the Vikings did not have multiple place-winners.
Sophomore Steve Zahrobsky (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.) won the 400 in :51.79 and senior Brian Benning (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) took the weight throw with a toss of 55' 2 ¾". For good measure, Benning was also third in the shot put with a mark of 45' 7".
The 1600 relay team of junior Daniel Doubet (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.), Zahrobsky, junior Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) and senior Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.) won with a time of 3:28.39. The distance medley of freshman Keegan Buttimer (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Riverside, Ill.), sophomore Jared Spivey (Annawan HS, Annawan, Ill.), freshman Alex Odenkirk (Ironwood Ridge HS, Tuscon, Arizona) and junior Justin Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) grabbed first place in 10:43.63.
The Vikings were second in seven events during the day-long meet. Justin Smith was the runner-up in the 800 with a time of 2:01.69. Junior Brian Pollastrini (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) finished second in the 3000 in 8:47.36 and freshman Grant Bell (Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa HS, Belgrade, Minn.) was second in the 5000 in 16:39.18. The 800 relay of sophomore Jay Graffagna (Geneva HS, LaFox, Ill.), Rindone, junior Jacob O'Rourke (Davenport Assumption HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) and junior Floyd Mays (Mooseheart HS, Justice, Ill.) took second with a time of 1:32.26. Sophomore Will Lardner (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) and freshman Jeff Padesky (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) tied for second in the pole vault as each cleared 12' 7 ½". Senior Phil Christensen (Kaneland HS, Maple Park, Ill.) was second in both the shot (45' 11 ¾") and the weight toss (53' 1").
Freshman Nowlan Savage (Arapahoe HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) placed third in the 200 in :23.26. Davis took third in the 55 hurdles with a time of :08.13. Senior Mike Tisza (Hersey HS, Prospect Heights, Ill.) placed third in the 800 in 2:02.65. Junior Mike Tovar (Mooseheart HS, Chicago, Ill.) was third in the triple jump (40' 11 ¾") and fourth in the long jump (21' 4"). Senior Adam Myers (Dixon HS, Dixon, Ill.) took third in the weight toss with a throw of 51' 1 ½". Junior Nathan Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) finished third in the 3000 with a time of 8:59.26.
Rindone took fourth in the 55 with a time of :06.65. Freshman Keith Cline (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.) was fourth in the 200 in :23.27 and seventh in the 55 (:06.72). Junior Edgar Valle (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.) was fourth in the 400 in :52.96. Sophomore Szymon Ligas (Peru St. Bede Academy, Spring Valley, Ill.) finished fourth in the mile with a time of 4:47.71. Freshman David Voland ran :08.16 to take fourth in the 55 hurdles. Buttimer was fourth in the 800 in 2:03.56. Freshman Josh Prosser (Eureka HS, Goodfield, Ill.) placed fourth in the high jump with a clearance of 6' 2 ¾". In the triple jump sophomore Scott Pospisil (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) was fourth with a leap of 39' 11 ½" and he also took fifth in the long jump with a mark of 20' 10".
Sophomore Cody Sharko (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) was fifth in the mile (4:48.97), senior Brett Bernatowicz (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) was fifth in the pole vault (12' 1 ½"), sophomore Justin Davidson (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.) was fifth in the triple jump (39' 11 ¼") and junior Kevin Macek (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) was fifth in the shot put (43' 9"). Davidson also took seventh in the high jump at 5' 10 ¾" and Macek was eighth in the weight throw with a toss of 42' 6 ¼".
Mays was sixth in the 55 in :06.71 with freshman Brandon Jasper (DeWitt Central HS, DeWitt, Iowa) placing sixth in the 200 in :23.47 and eighth in the 500 in :06.85. Odenkirk took sixth in the 800 in 2:06.16 while senior Pat Manser (St. Charles North HS, Elburn, Ill.) finished sixth in the mile in 4:53.14. Sophomore Tyler Busch (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) placed sixth in the 3000 with a time of 9:06.58. Freshman Mike Krusza (Plainfield South HS, Plainfield, Ill.) placed sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 38' 10 ½". Freshman Kyle Bennett (Davenport West HS, Davenport, Iowa) placed seventh in the 55 hurdles with a time of :08.32 and freshman Kevin Gordy (Lincoln-Way West HS, Mokena, Ill.) took seventh in the triple jump at 38' 1 ½".
