2011 Season - Westerberg named CCIW "Player of the Week"
|Augustana sophomore linebacker Erik Westerberg (41) has been named the Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin "Defensive Player of the Week" for his performance against North Park. He recorded 13 solo tackles increasing his season total to 58 which is good enough for an NCAA Division III leading average of 8.29 per game.|
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana sophomore linebacker Erik Westerberg (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) was all over the field for the Vikings in their 27-24 victory over North Park on Saturday, October 22. As a result of his performance, he has been selected as the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin “Defensive Player of the Week”.
Westerberg flew to the ball throughout the game recording 14 tackles for Augustana. Of those 14 tackles, 13 were of the solo variety. The strong performance by Westerberg and the rest of the Vikings defense helped lead them to their second straight victory over a CCIW opponent. With the win, Augustana’s record moves to 2-5 on overall and 2-2 in CCIW play.
Westerberg’s performance last week is not a new sight to Viking fans. He leads the team with 76 total tackles on the season. Of the 76 tackles he has recorded, 58 have been solo tackles and 18 have been assisted by his teammates. Westerberg currently leads all of NCAA Division III in solo tackles per game with an average of 8.29.
So far in his brief career, Westerberg has recorded 112 total tackles with 71 being solo tackles and 41 being assisted. He also has recorded four tackles for loss, one sack, and one interception for his career.
Erik, a math and business administration major, is the son of Peter and Annette Westerberg of Elmhurst, Illinois.
