2002 AUGUSTANA WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD REVIEW

TAMMIE BEASLEY, CHRISTINA GAMZER & LISA JOHNSON SHARE MVP HONORS FOR AUGUSTANA WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD TEAM; VIKINGS FALL SHORT IN ATTEMPT TO RUN STRING OF CCIW TITLES TO 10 STRAIGHT

Although they fell short in their attempt to win an unprecedented 10th straight College Conference of  Illinois & Wisconsin title, the Augustana College women's track & field team certainly put together another fine season. The Vikings of co-head coaches Fred Whiteside and Ron Standley were looking to make it an even decade in terms of winning CCIW outdoor titles but at the conference meet on May 3-4 at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin they fell short. North Central, the only other team in the league besides Augustana to ever win a championship, scored 174 points to snap a stranglehold that the Blue & Gold began back in 1993. Carthage, which won the indoor title, was second with 159.5 points while Augustana was a solid third with 154.5.

A trio of seniors who have instrumental in the success of the Vikings throughout their careers shared the team's Most Valuable Performer award that was announced at the end of the season. Triple jumper Tammie Beasley (Rockford East HS, Rockford, IL), distance runner Christina Gamzer (Whitnall HS, Greenfield, WI) and heptathlete Lisa Johnson (Oswego HS, Oswego, IL) were the MVP winners according to a vote of their teammates.

Beasley, who owns the outdoor school record in the triple jump, turned in the team's best performances of the year in both the long (17' 10 3/4") and triple (37' 8 3/4") jumps. She was the lone Augustana qualifier in the NCAA Division III outdoor meet this spring when she made it in the triple jump. Gamzer topped the team in the 1500 (4:46.40) and the 5000 (18:32.00) and ran on the 4x1600 relay team that set a new school record with a time of 21:16.07 at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa on April 25. Johnson turned in a point total of 4,186 in the heptathlon that was the top score for the Vikings in that event.

Distance runner Erin Marciniec (Benet Academy, Plainfield, IL) and 400 runner Emily Roling (Dubuque Wahlert HS, Dubuque, IA) shared the Most Valuable Freshman award. The Most Improved Athlete honor was split between Annie Livengood (Jacobs HS, Lake-in-the-Hills, IL), Sarah Manwaring (Wheaton St. Francis HS, Naperville, IL), Laurie Morgenthal (Wheeling HS, Wheeling, IL) and Erin Van Wetzinga (Rockford Lutheran HS, Rockford, IL). The "Erica Vortman Spirit" award went to Johnson, Katie Reif (Immaculate Heart of Mary HS, Westchester, IL) and Jennifer Smith (Davenport North HS, Davenport, IA).

Whiteside and Standley also announced captains for the 2003 season and they are: Devon Morrison (Highlands Ranch HS, Highlands Ranch, CO), Becca Parker (Moline HS, Moline, IL), Tracy Skibitzki (Badger HS, Lake Geneva, WI), Jordana Taylor (Michigan City HS, Michigan City, IN) and Van Wetzinga.

Three school records fell during the outdoor season. Parker tossed the shot 40' 10" on April 23 at the Monmouth dual meet to take down the previous mark of 40' 9 1/2" held by Sara Freberg in 2000. Megan Carlson (Stillman Valley HS, Stillman Valley, IL) set a new mark in the 3000 steeplechase of 12:09.4 in an event that was new this year. The 1600 relay team of Gamzer, Smith, Livengood and Melanie Round (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, IL) established a new record of 21:16.07 at the Drake Relays on April 25. The old record had been 21:40.28 by the team of Jennifer Walsh, Gamzer, Liz Stoppel and Lauren Habenicht set in 2001.

Augustana won the Early Spring Opener on March 23 and the Viking Olympics on April 13, placed second in the Washington Invitational on April 6 and was third in both the Augustana Invitational on April 20 and the Midwest Intercollegiate Championships on May 17. In addition, the Vikings beat Monmouth in a dual meet on April 23 by a score of 95-79.

At the CCIW championship meet, the Vikings got one individual championship performance and that came from Carol Reif in the javelin when she tossed the spear 118' 9". Johnson was second in the heptathlon with a score of 4,186 and she also set an CCIW record in the heptathlon 800 with a time of 2:22.24 in the final event. Beasley was third in the long jump and fourth in the triple jump. Parker placed third in the discus, fourth in the shot and second in the hammer. Janine Morris (West Chicago HS, West Chicago, IL) placed second in the high jump. Gamzer finished second in the 1500, seventh in the 800 and seventh in 1500 while Smith was second in the 800 and third in the 1500. Skibitzki placed second in the 100 hurdles, sixth in the 400 hurdles and eighth in the triple jump.
