2005 MEN’S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD
TOM MCINTIRE ESTABLISHES NEW CONFERENCE RECORD IN WINNING 35 POUND WEIGHT TOSS; DOUG COCHRANE ALSO NABS CCIW TITLE IN SHOT PUT; VIKINGS PLACE FOURTH IN CONFERENCE MEET; DISTANCE MEDLEY
Junior Tom McIntire (Galva HS, Galva, IL) established a new conference record in winning the 35 pound weight toss at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin indoor track & field championship on Saturday, February 26 in Bloomington, Illinois. McIntire won for the second straight year by getting off a throw of 53’ 5 ¾”, breaking the old record of 52’ 3 ¾ set by his former teammate and current coach David Gonzalez in 2002. The 35 pound weight toss has been conducted in five CCIW championships and Augustana has had the champion each time (Gonzalez in 2001-02-03 and McIntire in 2004 and again this year).
McIntire was not the only individual champion as senior Doug Cochrane (Kirksville HS, Kirksville, MO) won the shot put with a heave of 51’ 10”. Thanks to the championship performances by McIntire and Cochrane, the Vikings placed fourth in the team standings with 95.5 points. North Central won the team title with 186, followed by Carthage with 126.5 and Illinois Wesleyan at 117. Augustana was trailed by Wheaton (48.5), Elmhurst (42), Millikin (41) and North Park (6.5).
Besides winning the 35 pound weight throw, McIntire also placed third in the shot put behind Cochrane, with a toss of 48’ 2 ¾”. The Vikings also got a third place in the 35 pound weight from sophomore Eric Oberlin (Hampshire HS, Hampshire, IL), who recorded a mark of 47’ 10”. Sophomore Tony Hobbs (Rockton Hononegah HS, Roscoe, IL) also scored in the shot with an eighth place toss of 45’ 5”. Freshman Josh Branch (Rockton Hononegah HS, Roscoe, IL) took fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 43’ 5”. Sophomore Jason Petit (Rochester HS, Rochester, IL) was seventh in the pole vault with a clearance of 14’ 10 ¼” and freshman Justin Kossak (Somonauk HS, Somonauk, IL) took seventh in the high jump at 5’ 11 ½”.
Senior Jason Myers (Prairie Central HS, Fairbury, IL) took third in the 55 in :06.60 and freshman John Hamrin (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, IL) was sixth in :06.65. Myers also grabbed eighth in the 200 in :22.92. Junior Drew Letko (Crete-Monee HS, Crete, IL) placed seventh in the 400 in :51.59 with freshman Dan Gates (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, IL) finishing eighth in :51.91. Senior Ammon Paquette (United Township HS, Hampton, IL) was seventh in the 800 in 1:59.48 while in the mile freshman Rob Hanauer (East Peoria HS, East Peoria, IL) took third in 4:20.79, senior Nick Johnson (Lincoln Way HS, New Lenox, IL) was fourth in 4:22.42 and sophomore Eric Junco (Waubonsie Valley HS, Aurora, IL) placed eighth in 4:23.89. Sophomore Jeff Bailey (Deerfield HS, Deerfield, IL) finished fourth in the 5000 in 15:03.41 and junior Scott Walker (United Township HS, East Moline, IL) was seventh in the 55 hurdles.
During the course of the season the Vikings won a pair of invitationals, taking the Midwest Invitational in Monmouth, Illinois on January 29 by a narrow 1.5 point margin over host Monmouth and the Leif Ericson Invitational at home on February 5 by a wide 164 point margin over second place Aurora.
Four school records fell during the course of the season with Myers getting two of them. He ran :36.54 in the 300 at the Leif Erickson Invitational on February 5 and :22.56 in the 200 at the Midwest Invitational in Monmouth on January 29. McIntire set a new school record in the 35 pound weight throw at the Midwest Invitational and the distance medley team of Hanauer, Myers, Ammon Paquette (United Township HS, Hampton, IL, and Johnson ran 10:02.81 at the Iowa State Qualifier in Ames, Iowa on March 5.
