2003 MEN’S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD REVIEW

Mike Bartlett (800) and David Gonzalez (35 pound weight) win individual conference championships as Augustana places third in CCIW championship

Senior David Gonzalez (Maine West HS, Des Plaines, IL) won his third consecutive College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin title in the 35 pound weight throw on Saturday, March 1 in Bloomington, Illinois. Fellow senior Mike Bartlett (Highlands Ranch HS, Littleton, CO) set a new conference record in winning the 800. Those two accounted for the lone individual championships for Augustana as the Vikings placed third in the CCIW indoor meet with 133.50 points.

North Central won the team title for the third straight year with 179 points while Carthage placed second with 145. The rest of the field was far behind North Central, Carthage and Augustana. Elmhurst (48), Wheaton (44), North Park (38), Illinois Wesleyan (37.5) and Millikin (32) placed fourth through eighth, respectively.

Gonzalez has owned the 35 pound weight title, winning the previous two titles and he won number three with a toss of 51’ 4 ½”, besting teammate Tom McIntire (Galva HS, Galva, IL) for the championship. McIntire had a throw of 50’ 8” for second place.

Bartlett ran 1:54.10 in the 800 to beat runner-up Billy Simon of Carthage by over a half second as Simon was clocked in 1:54.75.

Once again the Vikings enjoyed a tremendous season in indoor track & field, winning the Midwest Pentangular and the Illinois Wesleyan Relays, beating Wartburg 98-59 in a dual meet and finishing fifth in the Warhawk Classic.

Gonzalez broke the only school record of the winter, throwing the 35 pound weight throw a distance of 53’ 9 ¼” on February 21 in Iowa City, Iowa. That broke his own school record of 52’ 3 ¾” set in 2002.

Gonzalez in the weight toss and Jeff Lindeman (Grayslake HS, Antioch, IL) in the pole vault (15’ 9”) were national meet qualifiers.
