2003 MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK REVIEW

Jeff Lindeman earns NCAA Division III All-American honor in pole vault; Brad Blake (100), Mike Bartlett (800), Nick Johnson (3000 steeplechase), Lindeman (pole vault), David Gonzalez (shot) and Adam Talbot (decathlon) win individual CCIW titles

Senior Jeff Lindeman (Grayslake HS, Antioch, IL) had a tremendous year from start to finish, culminating in a sixth place at the NCAA Division III national track & field championship which was held at St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York on May 22-24. Lindeman had a consistent year in an event known for the up and down performances of its competitors. He cleared 16’ ” in the national meet to finish sixth and earn NCAA Division III All-American honors. Prior to the national meet he finished first in the Early Spring Opener, the Wisconsin-LaCrosse dual meet, the Meet of Champions and the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship. He was second at the Wartburg Invitational and the Monmouth Invitational.

Lindeman was the lone Augustana athlete to earn All-American honors in 2003 although a total of nine Vikings under the tutelage of veteran head coach Paul Olsen met NCAA Division III national qualifying marks. Besides Lindeman, Randy Bill (Bureau Valley HS, Buda, IL), Nick Johnson (Lincoln Way HS, New Lenox, IL), Chris Coon (Sterling HS, Sterling, IL), Mike Bartlett (Highlands Ranch HS, Highlands Ranch, CO), Adam Talbot (Kewanee HS, Kewanee, IL), Adam King (Sterling HS, Sterling, IL), David Gonzalez (Maine West HS, Des Plaines, IL) and Tom McIntire (Galva HS, Galva, IL) were the others.

Bill, Johnson and Coon all qualified in the 3000 steeplechase. Bill posted the best time with a 9:12.28 clocking at the North Central Invitational on May 16 while Johnson ran 9:22.04 and Coon 9:22.68 at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational on May 9. Bartlett ran 1:52.25 in the 800 at the North Central Invitational on May 16 while Talbot scored 6,309 points in the Meet of Champions decathlon on April 18-19. King cleared 15’ 3” in the pole vault at the Loras Open on April 26 while Gonzalez qualified in both the discus and shot put. He threw the discus 161’ 2” and the shot 52’ 4 ” with both of those marks coming in the CCIW meet in Wheaton on May 2-3. McIntire qualified for the national meet in the discus with a toss of 155’ 10” in the CCIW meet.

Olsen completed his 35th season as the head coach of the Vikings track & field fortunes and like the others before it, this one was a success. Augustana won the Early Spring Opener and the Vikings Olympics, placed second in the Meet of Champions and the CCIW and lost a dual meet to eventual national champion Wisconsin-LaCrosse by just seven points (99-92).

At the CCIW meet the Vikings were a solid second with 157 points behind the 254 of champion North Central with six Augustana athletes winning individual titles. Brad Blake (Kewanee Wethersfield HS, Kewanee, IL) sped to victory in the 100 with a time of :10.93 and Bartlett repeated his indoor win in the 800 with a time of 1:53.41. Johnson won the 3000 steeplechase in 9:25.04 and Lindeman soared over 16’ 1 ” to win the pole vault. Gonzalez, a three time CCIW champion in the weight toss indoors, threw the shot 52’ 4 ” to pick up his first outdoor title. Talbot won the decathlon with 6,092 points for his second consecutive league title.

Blake and Bartlett were the co-winners of the Most Valuable Track Performer award by a vote of their teammates at the end of the season. Blake had best times in both the 100 (:10.87) and 200 (:21.97) while Bartlett owned the team’s best clocking in the 400 (:50.41) and 800 (1:52.25). Gonzalez won the Most Valuable Field Performer after he recorded top throws in three events: shot put, hammer and discus. He broke his own school record in the hammer with a toss of 161’ 3” at the Wartburg Invitational, eclipsing his own mark of 143’ 2” set in 2002. He threw the shot 52’ 4 ” and the discus 161’ 2” in the CCIW meet.

Jamel Williams (Mount Carmel HS, Chicago, IL) and Adam Houghton (Havana HS, Havana, IL) shared the Most Valuable Freshman Track Performer while McIntire won the Most Valuable Freshman Field Performer. The Most Improved Athlete went to Ray Prather (Lincoln HS, Lincoln, IL) and Steve Schulz (Galva HS, Galva, IL) grabbed Most Inspirational honors.

Captains-elect for 2004 are Bill, Ken Larson (Providence Catholic HS, New Lenox, IL), Dave Zemke (Walther Lutheran HS, Melrose Park, IL), Bartlett and Coon.

Johnson and Bartlett were voted to the Verizon Academic All-District team.
