2002 MEN'S SWIMMING REVIEW

MATT SIMCOCK WINS 50 FREESTYLE AT CCIW CHAMPIONSHIP & SETS NEW

SCHOOL RECORD IN BOTH 50 & 100 FREESTYLE EVENTS; 200 MEDLEY RELAY

TEAM ESTABLISHES NEW SCHOOL RECORD; VIKINGS PLACE FOURTH IN CONFERENCE

Prior to the weekend of February 14-16, it had been six years since the last time an Augustana men's swimmer had captured a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship. The Vikings' Miles Stevenson won the one meter diving in 1998 and 1999 but one would have to go back to 1996, when Brad Williams won the 200 backstroke, to find a year when an Augustana athlete won a CCIW title in a swimming event.

That all changed when sophomore Matt Simcock (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, IL) hit the water in the CCIW final. He churned through the 50 in a time of :21.56 to defeat defending champion Paul Gyorfi of Wheaton, who was clocked in :21.74. In the preliminary rounds Simcock turned in a time of :21.32, which is a new Augustana school record. He broke on the oldest record on the Viking books when he erased Frank Marik's 1977 mark of :21.75.

Simcock nearly pulled off a double victory as he placed second in the 100 freestyle with a time of :47.46, losing  to the :47.19 turned in by Gyorfi. He didn't get the CCIW title in the 100 freestyle, but Simcock did break the Augustana school record, replacing the :47.70 of Ken Dix in 1982. For good measure he also placed fifth in the 100 backstroke with a time of :54.09.

At the CCIW meet, which was held at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Simcock also had a hand in one other school record and that came in the 200 medley relay. The Vikings team of Jake Miller (Monmouth HS, Monmouth, IL), Ammon Paquette (United Township HS, Hampton, IL), Brandon Wold (Elk River HS, Elk River, MN) and Simcock placed second in a time of 1:39.12. That broke the old mark of 1:39.52 set just one year ago by Miller, Nick Tarpein, Wold and Simcock.

The Vikings finished fourth in the CCIW meet with 298 points as Wheaton won the team title with 698.50 points with Illinois Wesleyan second with 406.50. Carthage was third with 382, followed by the Vikings (298), North Central (170) and Millikin (157).

The 200 freestyle relay team of Roland Thornton (Dundee-Crown HS, Sleepy Hollow, IL), Nick Gehl (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, IL), Miller and Simcock placed third in 1:29.10. The 400 freestyle relay team of Simcock, Miller, Gehl and Thornton was third in 3:17.33. The 800 freestyle unit of Wold, Paquette, Troy Munson (Sterling HS, Sterling, IL) and Gehl was fourth in 7:40.65. The 400 medley team of Miller, Gehl, Paquette and Simcock finished second with a time of 3:37.22.

Gehl didn't break any individual school records but he did move into the school's top 10 all-time list in three events. He placed third in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:02.63 and with that moved into eighth place on Augustana's all-time list. He finished sixth in the 200 individual medley and that is the sixth best time ever recorded by a Viking. In the 400 individual medley Gehl was third in 4:24.18 and that moves him into seventh place on the all-time list.

Another who moved into the top 10 was Paquette who finished seventh in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.12.

Thornton finished ninth in the 50 freestyle with a time of :22.67 and ninth in the 100 freestyle in :50.13. Aaron Shaffer (Oswego HS, Oswego, IL) finished 11th in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:58.83 and 11th in the 1650 freestyle in 19:18.65. Also in the 1650 freestyle, Eric  Moldenhauer (Springfield Southeast HS, Springfield, IL) was eighth in 19:07.25 and Rob Zimmanck (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, IL) was ninth in 19:07.25. Miller placed eighth in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:06.98.

The 100 butterfly saw Thornton finish fifth in :56.13 while Wold took seventh in :56.15 and Miller was 10th in :57.29. Wold was fifth in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:11.43 with Ryan Ericksen (Conant HS, Elk Grove Village, IL) finishing 10th in 2:49.74 and Sean Heyer (Cedarburg HS, Cedarburg, WI) taking 11th in 3:10.68. Munson (Sterling HS, Sterling, IL) placed 11th in the 400 individual medley in 4:54.04.

Augustana enjoyed a tremendous year under the direction of second year head coach Paul Eure, finishing with a 4-2 dual meet record with the only losses coming at the hands of NCAA Division II institution Mankato State back on November 16 and 17. The Vikings were second in the North Central Invitational, third in the Augustana Invitational and fourth in the Grinnell Invitational. Augustana won the Beloit Invitational, a four team event on January 26, with 444 points.

Simcock was one of the team leaders all season for the Vikings as he finished the year with the team's top times in a total of six individual events (50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 100 back, 200 back and 200 breaststroke. He also swam on four relay teams that ended up having the team's best times this year.

Gehl, just a freshman, topped the team in six swimming events (500 free, 1000 free, 100 fly, 200 fly, 200 IM & 400 IM) plus he had the best score in one meter diving. He was on four relays that had the best time on the team.

Paquette turned in the best time in the 100 breaststroke and Moldenhauer had the fastest time in the 1650 freestyle.
