2010 Season - Vikings face three ranked teams in California

Senior Courtney Jungnickel recorded 18 kills as the Vikings defeated Pomona-Pitzer in the final match of the California-Lutheran Invitational on Saturday, September 11.

Facing a three nationally ranked teams ranked and competing thousands of miles from home is a tough enough task. Throw in the fact that six freshmen are getting considerable amounts of playing time and the challenge can be overwhelming. Despite that, Augustana still came away with a victory at the California-Lutheran Invitational that was held in Thousand Oaks, California on September 10-11.

First year head coach Jamie Walters’ team won its final match in the tournament, defeating Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday, September 11 by a count of 3-1 (25-20, 15-25, 25-14, 25-18). The Vikings started the tournament with a tough five game loss to LaVerne on Friday, September 10 by a score of 3-2. Augustana won games one and three by identical 25-18 scored but lost the second and fourth games by counts of 25-9 and 25-11. The fifth and deciding game went to LaVerne by a margin of 17-15. LaVerne was ranked 34th in the latest NCAA Division III national poll by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). After tangling with LaVerne, the Vikings got host California-Lutheran, ranked 26th in the pre-season poll, in the nightcap. Augustana fell 3-0, losing by scores of 25-16, 25-17, 25-21. On Saturday, September 11, it was 29th ranked Redlands across the nets and the Vikings dropped a 3-0 decision by scores of 25-15, 25-21, 25-17.

It was the fourth and final match of the tournament that produced the victory as Augustana parlayed an 18 kill performance by senior Courtney Jungnickel (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) into a 3-1 victory. The Vikings are now 2-8 on the season.

09/11 – LAVERNA 3, AUGUSTANA 2 (18-25; 25-9; 18-25; 25-11; 17-15)
The Vikings battled 34th ranked LaVerne to the wire, finally dropping a tough five set match by losing the deciding game by a score of 17-15. Augustana won 25-18 in games one and three but lost 25-9 and 25-11 in the second and fourth sets.  Senior Courtney Jungnickel (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) led the way with 10 kills and she added four service aces, 10 digs and one setting assist. Freshman Paige Buchanan (Millard North HS, Omaha, Neb.) had nine kills, eight digs and one service ace. Junior Brianna Skeens (Vernon Hills HS, Libertyville, Ill.) picked up six kills and one solo block. Sophomore setter Kelsey Mikula (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) had 26 assists. Freshman Kristen Yerkes (Marist HS, Palos Heights, Ill.) had four service aces and the Vikings had 14 during the course of the match.

09/11 – CALIFORNIA LUTHERAN 3, AUGUSTANA 0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-21)
Against a team ranked 26th in the pre-season NCAA Division III ranking, Augustana fell 3-0, losing by scores of 25-18, 25-17, 25-21. Senior Courtney Jungnickel (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) had eight kills with nine digs, two assisted blocks, a service ace and one setting assist. Junior Brianna Skeens (Vernon Hills HS, Libertyville, Ill.) picked up six kills and one assisted block. Freshman Morgan Stittleburg (Black River Falls HS, Black River Falls, Wis.) had five kills, two digs and one assisted block. Sophomore Kelsey Mikula (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) had 12 setting assists and eight digs. Sophomore Shannon Slick (Rockton Hononegah HS, Roscoe, Ill.) led the team in digs with 18.

09/12 – REDLANDS 3, AUGUSTANA 0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-17)
Continuing with the theme of nationally ranked opponents, the Vikings dropped a 3-0 decision to 29th rated Redlands by margins of 25-15, 25-21, 25-17. Senior Courtney Jungnickel (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) had nine kills with eight digs and one solo block. Junior Brianna Skeens (Vernon Hills HS, Libertyville, Ill.) and freshman Paige Buchanan (Millard North HS, Omaha, Neb.) each had seven kills. Sophomore Kelsey Mikula (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) and freshman Katrina Colclasure (Tri-Valley HS, Bloomington, Ill.) each had 15 setting assists and sophomore Shannon Slick (Rockton Hononegah HS, Roscoe, Ill.) led the team in digs with 13.

09/12 – AUGUSTANA 3, POMONA-PITZER 1 (25-20, 15-25, 25-14, 25-18)
Led by the whopping 18 kills from senior outside hitter Courtney Jungnickel (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.), the Vikings picked up a 3-1 win over Pomona-Pitzer to close out their California sojourn on a positive note. Augustana won the first game 25-20 before falling 25-15 in game two. In games three and four, the Vikings were really clicking, winning by margins of 25-14 and 25-18. Jungnickel had eight digs and a service ace to go along with her 18 kills. Freshman Kristen  Yerkes (Marist HS, Palos Heights, Ill.) had 10 kills, nine digs, three service aces and an assisted block. Junior Brianna Skeens (Vernon Hills HS, Libertyville, Ill.) was credited with nine kills and four total blocks (three solos and one assist). Senior Jenna Loncar (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) contributed seven kills and an assisted block.  Sophomore Kelsey Mikula (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) had 28 assists and five digs while freshman Katrina Colclasure (Tri-Valley HS, Bloomington, Ill.) picked up 14 assists and six digs. Sophomore Shannon Slick (Rockton Hononegah HS, Roscoe, Ill.) had 13 digs.
