2009 Season - 2009 SOFTBALL REVIEW

Fueled by the explosive power provided by juniors Brittany Snoreck (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) and Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) in the middle of the lineup, and helped by a productive pitching staff, the Augustana softball team recorded a fine 28-14 record in 2009. The Vikings established two team and one individual school record and also saw head coach Kris Kistler notch an individual milestone.

When her team beat North Central by a score of 5-0 on Saturday, April 25, it was her 300 th victory as a college coach. She now has notched 301 wins as a head coach with 292 of those coming at Augustana and nine from when she was the head coach at SUNY-Plattsburgh in 1999. Her overall head coaching record is 301-151-2 and her record with the Vikings is 292-141-2.

Snoreck had a tremendous season as the starting catcher/designated hitter. She batted .410 with 50 hits in 122 at-bats while scoring 29 runs with 12 doubles, six home runs and 36 runs-batted-in. She was a first team all-region selection by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and was first team all-conference for the second straight year. She has moved into sixth place on the career list in doubles with 28 and she is ninth in home runs (9) and eighth in RBI (73). Snoreck was also a third team Academic All-District selection by ESPN – The Magazine.

Quaritsch got into the power act as well as she is now the career school record holder for home runs with 20 and she is fifth in RBI with 75. This past year she batted .358 with 48 hits in 134 at-bats while scoring 31 runs with nine doubles, nine home runs and 38 RBI. She was a second team all-region selection and was named to the first team of the all-conference team for the second year in a row.

Snoreck and Quaritsch were joined on the first team all-conference squad by sophomore right fielder Dawn Kernich (Mt. Olive HS, Mt. Olive, Ill.). Kernich fought her way into the starting lineup early in the campaign and wound up hitting .400 with 38 hits in 95 at-bats while scoring 20 runs and stealing 12 bases.

Junior pitcher Jackie Gill (Heyworth HS, Heyworth, Ill.), junior shortstop Chrissy Rosin (Niles West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.), junior center fielder Missy Fobert (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) and sophomore third baseman/utility player Stephanie Sarb (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) were all named second team all-conference.

Rosin is now on the career list in five offensive categories. She is 10 th in at-bats (374), eighth in runs scored (85), ninth in hits (126), 10 th in doubles (21) and 10 th in stolen bases (34).

Gill took over as the number one pitcher and she had an outstanding year. She was 13-8 with a 2.06 earned run average in 119 innings of work. She struck out 60 and walked just 24. Sophomore Sheldon Ritzheimer (Trenton-Wesclin HS, Trenton, Ill.) was 11-4 on the mound with a 2.36 earned run average and she notched a team leading 112 strikeouts. She moved into sixth on the single season list for strikeouts.

As a team the Vikings set new school records for runs scored with 249 and hits with 399. The old record for runs scored was 245 set way back in 1980 and the hits mark was 369 from the 1996 season.

Gill was named the team’s Most Valuable Player while Snoreck was the Best Offensive Player and Fobert won the Best Defensive Player award. Junior Ashley Mulligan (Bradley Bourbonnais HS, Bourbonnais, Ill.) was voted Most Improved while junior Andi Walker (Plainfield South HS, Plainfield, Ill.0 was the winner of the Viking award.

Augustana led the CCIW in 12 team offensive categories, including stolen base attempts (35), steals (30), sacrifice bunts (16), hit-by-pitch (10), total bases (185), home runs (9), RBI (71), hits (132), runs scored (78), on base percentage (.378), slugging percentage (.456) and team batting (.325). Those numbers account only for games played within the conference regular season. In addition to the team honors, Quaritsch led the league in total bases with 28 and Rosin was tops in steals with nine.

Since Kistler took over the Viking program in 2000, the Blue & Gold has never won less than 23 games in a single season. Five times the Vikings have made it over 30 wins and the 28 victories notched this season is the sixth highest total in the program’s history.
