Augustana head men's basketball coach Grey Giovanine has taken a total of eight teams on international trip, including five with Augustana. He called his current team's opponent on Monday, August 12 the "best competition I have seen in all my years of international experience".
For the second straight night, the Augustana men's basketball team dropped a close contest in Brazil. This time Club Santo Andre defeated the Vikings 71-69, just 24 hours after Grey Giovanine's team fell to America De Sap Jose Do Rip Preto 80-79 in overtime.
Facing the America De Sap Jose Do Rip Preto professional team on Wednesday, August 7 in Rio Claro, Brazil, Augustana dropped a tough overtime decision by a score of 80-79. The hosts trotted out a front-line that went 7' 1", 6' 10" and 6' 9" and enjoyed a 43-20 advantage in free throw attempts.
The long plane flight to Brazil less than 24 hours ago didn’t seem to bother Augustana much as the Vikings cruised to a 107-71 victory over Jundiaense/Vinjedo on Tuesday in the first of four games in Brazil. Veteran head coach Grey Giovanine’s team got off to a quick start and never looked back.
Augustana has been piling up victories on the court during Grey Giovanine's tenure as the head men's basketball coach, which began in 1999-00. Now, the Vikings are reaping an award for work in the classroom as well as they were honored as one of just 97 teams nationwide (all divisions) in a brand-new program sponsored by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).
