International Student Orientation

Aug. 18-25, 2021

International Student Orientation (ISO) is designed to provide you with an introduction to Augustana College, Rock Island and the Quad-Cities. Attendance is required for all international students.

The hotels and motels on this list offer discounts for Augustana visitors.

Students who have to self-quarantine will be housed close to campus at the Holiday Inn Rock Island and will can participate in ISO virtually. Join the Virtual International Student Orientation.

Please note that events are subject to change. You will receive the final schedule when you arrive.

Wednesday, Aug. 18, and Thursday, Aug. 19

New international student arrivals and move-in day: Welcome to all international students and their families

  • 9 a.m. Breakfast (hotel guests only, delivered to room)
  • 9 a.m.-11 p.m. International student arrival and move-in. Check-in to Swanson Hall for keys, key fobs and linens.
  • 9-10:30 a.m. Meet and Greet: OISSS office staff (Gerber Center, Gävle room 4)
  • 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Open house (Gerber Center, Gävle rooms 1 and 2). Stop by or stay a while for drinks and snacks.
  • 10:30 a.m./1 p.m. Lunch
    • On campus: 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. (Gerber Center Dining Room)
    • Hotel: 1 p.m. (delivered to room)
  • 5 p.m./6 p.m. Dinner
    • On campus: 5-7 p.m. (Gerber Center Dining Room)
    • Hotel: 6 p.m. (Captain's Room, first floor). Bring your meal and have dinner with Global Ambassadors and other students.
  • 7 p.m. Social Hour. Meet current international students for activities, drinks and snacks.
    • On campus: Brew Patio
    • Hotel: Captain's Room, first floor

Friday, Aug. 20

Virtual International Student Orientation for students who cannot participate in person.
Hotel guests may use the Captain's Room 1 on the first floor.

  • 9 a.m. Breakfast (hotel guests only, delivered to room)
  • 9 a.m. Welcome (Gerber Center, all Gävle rooms)
  • 9:15 a.m. Immigration 101 Workshop
    • Check-in: F-1, J-1 and Maintaining status. Bring a laptop.
    • Know Your Rights workshop
    • Augie 101 workshop
  • 11:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Lunch and Breakout sessions
    • On campus:
      • 11:30 a.m. Lunch (Gerber Center Dining Room)
      • 2-3 p.m. Campus tour with GA (Viking Plaza)
      • 3:30 p.m. Check in with your GA (Viking Plaza)
    • Hotel:
      • 11:30 a.m. Quad Cities tour with GAs
      • 1 p.m. Lunch with GAs (Captain’s Room 1, first floor). Bring your meal.
      • 2:45 p.m. Target/Kohls/Ross shopping trip (Main hotel lobby). Shuttle leaves at 3 p.m., pick-up at Target at 5 p.m.
  • 5 p.m. Dinner and Breakout sessions
    • On campus:
      • 5-7 p.m. Dinner (Gerber Center Dining Room)
      • 6:30 p.m. Target/Kohls/Ross shopping trip (Gerber Center, lobby of dining room)
        • Learn to ride the MetroLink bus and shop for everything you need. Bring your student ID.
      • 9 p.m. MetroLink pick-up at Target and return to Augie.
    • Hotel:
      • 6 p.m. Dinner with GAs (Captain’s Room 1, first floor). Bring your meal.
      • 7 p.m. Social activity and ice cream (Hotel lobby). Get an ice cream cone from 7-7:30 p.m.

Saturday, Aug. 21

Virtual International Student Orientation for students who cannot participate in person.
Hotel guests may use the Captain's Room 1 on the first floor.

  • 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Bank sessions. Open a bank account.
    • On campus: 8:30-8:50 a.m. Chase Bank (Gerber Center Dining Room). Meet GAs to walk to the bus. Ride MetroLink to go open a bank account. Bring your student ID, Augie email address as well as your original I-20 and passport/visa.
    • Hotel: 10 a.m.-1 p.m. American Bank and Trus Bank (Captain's Room, first floor). Bring your I-20, Passport/Visa, Augustana e-mail. You will need $50.00 to open a bank account.
  • 9 a.m. Breakfast (Hotel guests only, delivered to room)
  • 10:30 a.m-1 p.m. Lunch and breakout session
    • On campus: 
      • 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Lunch (Gerber Center Dining Room)
      • 11:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Target/Kohls/Ross shopping trip (Gerber Center, lobby of dining room) Learn to ride the MetroLink bus and shop for everything you need. Bring your student ID. Pick-up at 4 p.m.
    • Hotel: 
      • 1 p.m. Lunch (delivered to room)
      • 3 p.m. Quad Cities local market tour or Target/Kohls/Ross shopping trip (Gerber Center, lobby of dining room) Learn to ride the MetroLink bus and shop for everything you need. Bring your student ID. Pick-up at 4 p.m.
  • 5 p.m. Dinner
    • On campus: 5-7 p.m. (Gerber Center Dining Room)
    • Hotel: 6 p.m. (Captain’s Room 1, first floor). Bring your meal.
  • 7 p.m. Virtual Social Hour.
    • 7-7:30 p.m.: Join in on the fun with all GAs and peers
    • 7:30 p.m.: Meet your GA (see Google calendar invite from your GA)

Sunday, Aug. 22

  • 2 p.m. Culture Minute (Gävle Rooms)
  • 3 p.m. Global Ambassador Panel (Gävle Rooms)
  • 5 p.m. Dinner
    • On campus: 5-7 p.m. (Gerber Center Dining Room)
    • Hotel: 6 p.m. (Captain’s Room 1, first floor). Bring your meal.
  • 7 p.m. Social Hour: Global Connect
    • On campus: Global Ambassadors and PACE mentors from the Office of Student Inclusion and Diversity (OSID) will lead a fun evening of activities where you’ll meet and connect with other peers.
    • Hotel: Location TBD

Monday, Aug. 23, and Tuesday, Aug. 24

Orientation and Registration

Continue on with Orientation and Registration: Register for classes, meet your academic advisor and connect with the incoming first-year class. OISSS will see you Wednesday. Check your e-mail for the schedule from O&R.

Wednesdays, Aug. 25

  • 10-10:30 a.m. Debrief: Self-Advocacy and Allship (Brunner Theatre)
  • 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Lunch
    • On campus: 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. (Gerber Center Dining Room)
    • Hotel: 1 p.m. (Captain’s Room 1, first floor). Bring your meal.
  • 1:30-2:30 p.m. Meet and Greet: Faculty & Staff (Great Hall, Evald)
  • 3 p.m. Get involved on campus: Clubs and organizations at Augie (Brunner Theatre)
  • 3:30 p.m. Welcome Week: Peer Mentors (Brunner Theatre). Meet your peer mentors during Welcome Week and find out what Welcome Week has in store for you.
  • 5 p.m. Dinner
    • On campus: 5-7 p.m. (Gerber Center Dining Room)
    • Hotel: 6 p.m. (Captain’s Room 1, first floor). Bring your meal.
  • 7 p.m. Social Hour with Global Ambassadors

Thursday, Aug. 26, 6:30 p.m.: Walmart/Target shopping trip (Gerber Center Dining Room lobby)
Take advantage of this trip to go shopping for bed linens and essential/personal items.

Saturday, Aug. 28, 8:30 a.m.: Chase Bank (Gerber Center Dining Room)
Ride the MetroLink bus to go open a bank account. Bring your student ID, your Augie email address as well as your original I-20 and passport/visa.
