Biographical Sketch

G.M. Stephenson was the grandson of Steffan Steffansson (1807-1855), a crofter from Södra Vi in Northeastern Småland, who came to New Sweden, Iowa, in 1849 (see Kastrup, The Swedish Heritage in America, p. 177). G.M. Stephenson served on the faculties of De Paw University and Dartmouth College before joining the University of Minnesota as Professor of History. 


Content

The papers include photocopies of letters sent to Swedish newspapers from 1841-1878. Many of the letters concern the Bishop Hill Colony in Illinois. Collection includes a chronological index.  

Also includes a photograph and some letters written by Augustana Art Professor Olof Grafström to G.M. Stephenson, 1928.

Also includes a clipping of "Mitt Möte med Svensk-Amerika vid Sekelskiftet"
