As an assistant in corporate projects at Copy Solution International, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Cordero had many different tasks.

He helped translate documents, participated in conference calls and meetings, and provided detailed presentations.

Cordero, a junior majoring in international business, economics and finance from Franklin Park, Ill., also is minoring in Spanish.

"Augustana coursework helped me understand the language being spoken, as well as various business practices," he said. "It also helped me do some finances and keep up to speed with the people in the office."

He said a highlight was working on the reprinting of the national ID for everyone in the Dominican Republic.

"I was surprised at how much I was able to learn during my time there and the extent to which they allowed me to participate," he said. "I was also surprised at how welcoming the people were toward me and how much they were willing to teach me."

He said the internship gave him confidence that he is studying the correct field.

"It was a great experience in a great country! I was able to travel to different locations and was surprised at how welcoming the people of the Dominican Republic are towards Americans," he said.
