2013-2014 season will showcase a variety of works

The Augustana College Theatre Arts Department has announced its 2013-2014 season. The season will include “The Marriage of Figaro,” a comedy written in 1778, “A Green River,” written by local playwright Aaron Randolph III, and “Something’s Afoot,” a murder mystery musical presented in conjunction with Opera @ Augustana.

Schedule

The Marriage of Figaro, a comedy in five acts, written in 1778 by Pierre Beaumarchais

Directed by Dr. Jennifer Popple

Oct. 18-20, 25-27, Potter Theatre, Bergendoff Hall of Fine Arts

Writing a few years before the French Revolution, barely concealing himself in his hero, Beaumarchais pours his class rage into a stock-comic vessel that barely contains it under pressure. Three years after the happy ending of The Barber of Seville, it's the valet's turn to marry. But his master the Count has tired of his lovely Countess, and lusts for Figaro's bride-to-be, Suzanne. He determines to revive the ancient droit de seigneur — the lord of the manor's right to bed her. Figaro and the women concoct a counter-plot; the Count's page, Cherubin makes hash of it through his passionate crush on the Countess. The double/triple/quadruple misunderstanding yields one of the most perfect farce scenes of all time, featuring a chair and a closet, and one of the finest master-servant scenes, featuring a razor. The play, as great in its kind as the opera Mozart made from it, proclaims Figaro a better man than the Count and the women better humans than the men.

A Green River, by Aaron Randolph III

Directed by Phil McKinley '73

December 11-15, Potter Theatre, Bergendoff Hall of Fine Arts

Erik White is a young military veteran who has returned from overseas to a world he now struggles to recognize.  As Erik contemplates his fate on the banks of a green river, the realities of being a soldier, a husband, and an expectant father weigh heavily on his already troubled mind, and the young man's life begins to flash before his eyes-Erik's past and present colliding in a mixture of memory and dream as murky as the old river itself.
