Summer Vocal Academy

Program dates: June 16-20, 2019

Program cost: $680

Course description

The voice faculty at Augustana value and affirm singing in all its varied forms. We are committed to teaching students who are interested in exploring their communication and artistic skills in many genres of vocal music, whether planning to be music majors or not. We are grounded in principles of traditional Classical vocal training, but we also recognize the importance of Musical Theater (MT) and Popular Culture Music (PCM) in our society as vehicles for self-expression and socio-political and cultural commentary. Students who want to increase their musicianship and vocal skills, enhance their audition performing confidence, and grow as leaders in their singing ensembles will find our summer program to be just what they need.

Instructors: Michelle Crouch and Maureen Holmes

Michelle Crouch was born and raised on the Canadian prairies, and has been a faculty member in the Augustana College music department for the past nine years, teaching musicianship and voice. She directs Augustana’s OperX Ensemble, which creates a wide range of educational experiences of musical storytelling. She has sung in several award-winning vocal ensembles under some of the finest conductors in the world. She performs a wide range of solo and chamber vocal repertoire, from Medieval to music written yesterday, and loves the sheer diversity of vocal expression available to singers. Her primary research interest is musical literacy, particularly for singers, and her vocal pedagogy seeks to cultivate that connection in exciting ways that increase vocal freedom.

Maureen Holmes, mezzo-soprano, has been part of the voice area faculty in the Augustana Music Department for 5 years. Mrs. Holmes holds a Master of Music from Westminster Choir College, graduating with distinction, in addition to a Bachelor of Music from Drake University. Her degree work has been both in the areas of performance and vocal pedagogy. Along with classical performances and training, she maintains an active schedule as choral singer and musical theater enthusiast, regularly performing with regional professional choirs and collaborating in theater productions, most recently as music director for a production of Sondheim’s Into the Woods
