2015 Spring Term in Africa

Study, Intern, Travel and Serve in Ghana, West Africa

The next anticipated Ghana Program will be in Spring of 2018.

The 2015 Spring Term in Africa offers students the chance to visit Ghana, where they will live with families, study with Augustana faculty and intern with local and international NGO's.  This program gives students a better udnerstanding of the unique cultures, histories and challenges of West Africa.  Students will study Art, Music and History, but will also earn credits for their service-based internships. 

Program Dates:  March-May 2015.  

Program Cost:  $17,250.  This fee includes tuition, airfare, ground transportation, lodging, meals in home-stay housing, group excursions and international health insurance.  Program fee does not include meals while traveling outside of Accra, Ghana or discretionary spending.

This program is ATLAS Grant eligible for current Augustana students.  This $2,000 grant can be added to your Augie Choice funding, for a total grant of $4,000 towards the program cost.

Courses Offered:  This program will offer three 3-credit courses, a 1-credit academic seminar and a 2-credit Service Learning Internship.  The Seminar and Service Learning Internship are required.  Students may opt to take 2 or 3 of the remaining three-credit courses.  All participants will receive credit for a Learning Community as well as the learning perspectives connected with each course (see below).  Courses on this program are:

  • Art 342: Studio Art of Africa (PA, G). Taught by Dr. Rowen Schussheim-Anderson
  • History 375: West Africa Past & Present (PP).  Taugth by Dr. Todd Cleveland
  • Music 342: Music & Culture of West Africa (PH, G).  Taught by Dr. John Pfautz
  • ISS 302: Seminar on African Culture.  1 Credit course team taught by program faculty
  • INTR: 2-credit Service Learning Internship Program:  Exact course number TBD.

Kokum National Park, Ghana

Financial Aid:  Students participating in this program are eligible for the same grants, scholarships and loan eligibility while abroad as they would be for this trimester on campus.  When billed for the program each student will receive a detailed billing statement which reduces the cost of the program in accordance with the student's anticipated financial assistance. 

This program is Augie Choice eligible for all students who have completed 3 terms or 30 credits (sophomore status) or higher at the time of departure.  Transfer students who have also completed 3 terms or 30 credits at Augustana are also eligible for the Augie Choice grant.  Additionally, this program is eligible for consideration of the ATLAS Grant Program.  Please see the link above for more information on this $2,000 grant.

This program is open only to full-time Augustana students. 

Funds from Augie Choice are available for this program to any student with Sophomore status at the time of the program departure.
