Since being formed as an Australian children's charity in 1988, Starlight has brightened the lives of seriously ill and hospitalised children, and their families, throughout Australia. Starlight programs are delivered both in and out of hospital, providing positive distraction to children in their time of need. Starlight relies entirely on the support of the community and the generosity of supporters to exist and therefore runs numerous fundraising events to support their valuable work with sick children.
Brittany's pre-trip thoughts
Internship: My internship is at the Starlight Room Australian Children's Charity in children's psychology. I am working with seriously ill and hospitalized children.
Why are you participating in the Augustana in Australia program? I am participating in the study abroad program because it is an amazing opportunity and I do not think I will ever get an opportunity like this again!
What value do you hope to add back to the internship site? I have learned a lot at my clinical experience as far as recreational therapy goes. I'm hoping I may be able to bring some games and fun things for the patients to do.
What do you hope to learn on your internship? I hope to gain hands-on experience in children's psychology to better prepare me for graduate school. I also hope to learn and get a good idea of what it's like to be in the work force, because I have no experience like this.
Where do you plan to travel during your term "down under"? I would love to go to the Great Barrier Reef. We are planning on going to Fraser Island for spring break and I would like to go to Melbourne.
What do you anticipate to be the highlight of your experience "down under"? I think the whole thing will be a highlight. This trip is a once in a lifetime opportunity and even though I am nervous, I know I am going to learn so much about myself, my career and life in general.
