Faculty recital: Charles Schmidt, piano

Dr. Charles Schmidt will perform a solo piano recital. He will play Piano Sonata No. 2, "Concord, Mass., 1840-1860" by Charles Ives.

The sonata's four movements represent figures associated with transcendentalism.

The four movements are:

"Emerson" (after Ralph Waldo Emerson)
"Hawthorne" (after Nathaniel Hawthorne)
"The Alcotts" (after Bronson Alcott and Louisa May Alcott)
"Thoreau" (after Henry David Thoreau)

An assistant professor of music at Augustana, Dr. Schmidt, has given recitals and masterclasses throughout the U.S. and worked extensively in the fields of musical theatre and opera, both as an accompanist and musical director. He has presented lectures for many organizations and has been featured several times on Iowa Public Radio.
