2009-10 Season - 2006-07 WOMEN'S SWIMMING REVIEW

2006-07 WOMEN”S SWIMMING REVIEW

Ramsey Vens named “Most Outstanding Performer” at CCIW meet as Vikings place fourth; women’s swimmers win title at Eureka Invitational and defeat Knox and Monmouth in dual meets

Ramsey Vens (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) ended her sophomore season in style, winning a title in the 100 backstroke (:59.89) at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championship meet in Wheaton, Illinois en route to being named the meet’s “Most Outstanding Performer”.  It is the second straight title in the 100 backstroke for Vens, who won the title last season as a freshman with a school record time of :59.34.  She also won the 200 backstroke title last year at the conference championship meet, crossing the finish line in 2:10.04.  Vens now has three career CCIW individual titles.  This season, she recovered from a broken neck injury that occurred last summer to swim very well for the Vikings as a sophomore.  Vens had a team best time in both the 100 (:59.89) and 200 backstroke (2:14.31) events this year.  She also had the fastest time in the 500 freestyle, with a clocking of 5:24.99.  All three marks were set at the CCIW championship meet.

The Vikings finished fourth at the CCIW Championship meet for the third consecutive year, earning 364 points, narrowly behind Illinois Wesleyan who was third with 399 points.  Wheaton was crowned team champion with 940 points and Carthage was second with 723 points.  Millikin (323 points) and North Central (124 points) finished fifth and sixth at the meet.  Vens won the only individual title with her win in the 100 backstroke, but the Vikings had several other strong finishes.  Vens was second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:24.99.  She teamed with Megan Daily (Chatham-Glenwood HS, Chatham, Ill.), Stefanie Leafblad (Warren Township HS, Gurnee, Ill.), and Ashley Casper (Lake Park HS, Itasca, Ill.) for a time of 4:15.87 and a third place finish in the 400 medley relay.  Vens, Jackie Grendzinski (Thornton Fractional South HS, Lansing, Ill.), Sara Hlavin (St. Viator HS, Elk Grove Village, Ill.), and Casper combined for a third place finish in the 200 medley relay.  The foursome finished the event with a time of 1:56.10.

Augustana won the Eureka Invitational on January 27 after taking the same title a year ago.  The Vikings defeated five teams at the meet and crowned champions in seven individual events.  Casper had perhaps her best day in the pool as a Viking, winning three different races.  She won the 100 breaststroke (1:14.37), the 100 freestyle (:58.98), and the 50 breaststroke (:34.85).  Hlavin was a double winner at the meet, taking the top spot in both the 200 freestyle (2:07.65) and 100 individual medley (1:08.59) events.  Vens captured victories in the 100 (1:02.48) and 50 backstroke (:29.44) races.

The 2006-07 women’s squad made its mark in the top 10 lists with five different swimmers earning a spot in at least one event.  Vens holds the school record in the 100 backstroke with a time of :59.34, which she set in 2006, and recovered from a serious injury to swim the second fastest time in school history in the event, with a clocking of :59.89 in 2007.  Vens also set the school record in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:09.71 last season.  She returned with the fourth fastest time in school history of 2:14.31 this year as a sophomore.  Vens also swam a 5:24.99 in the 500 freestyle, narrowly behind the school record of 5:24.82, set by Mandy Huizer in 1998.  She sits second all-time in this event.  Casper broke into the top 10 in three events.  She swam the eighth fastest time in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.02) and the tenth best time in both the 50 freestyle (:25.22) and 100 freestyle (:55.10) events.  Hlavin broke into the top 10 charts with the eighth best time in the 1650 freestyle (19:07.16) and the ninth fastest clocking in the 1000 freestyle (11:37.56).  Leafblad is currently ninth all-time in the 400 individual medley with a time of 5:02.13.  Daily holds the tenth best time in the 200 breaststroke with a finish of 2:38.76.

The Vikings were 2-3 on the season in dual meets.  Augustana had team wins over Knox (100-64) and Monmouth (164-81).  The team also finished third out of six teams at the Augustana Invitational and fifth out of nine teams at the North Central Invitational.  Head coach Jake Anderson is now 7-10 in dual meets with three fourth place finishes at the CCIW championship meet in three seasons at the helm.
