2000-01 MSW REVIEW

MATT SIMCOCK NAMED MOST VALUABLE PERFORMER AS VIKINGS FINISH 2000-01 SEASON WITH THIRD PLACE FINISH IN CCIW; SCHOOL RECORDS FALL IN 200 MEDLEY & 200 FREESTYLE RELAYS

First year head coach Paul Eure guided the 2000-01 Augustana College men's swimming & diving team to a 4-1 dual meet record and a solid third place finish in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin. It was the best conference place finish for the Vikings since a third place in 1993-94.

In addition, two relay teams, the 200 medley and 200 freestyle established new school records. The lone loss in dual meets came against Illinois Institute of Technology on January 24 by a score of 129-80. During the course of the season the Vikings defeated Knox (114-81), Loras (113-79), Coe (145-48) and Beloit (118-33). They were also third in the North Central Invitational and Grinnell Invitational and champions of the DuPage Invitational.

Freshman Matt Simcock (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, IL) was selected as the Vikings Most Valuable Performer after he put together a season that saw him record the team's top times in five individual events and four relays. He dominated in the sprint freestyle events, recording times of :21.95 in the 50, :48.54 in the 100 and 1:55.70 in the 200. He also recorded a mark of 10:58.93 in the 1000 freestyle and 2:06.55 in the 200 backstroke. After just one year he moved into the top ten listing in the following events - 50 freestyle (fourth), 100 freestyle (third) and 200 backstroke (seventh). At the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship meet he was second in the 50 freestyle. He was also rewarded as the team's Hardest Worker.

The Most Improved Performer award went to Todd Mollan (Rockford Boylan HS, Rockford, IL) and the Best Attitude honor was given to Chris Sweet (Metamora HS, Metamora, IL). Sweet and Matt Hays (Champaign Centennial HS, Champaign, IL) were selected as the team captains for the 2000-01 season.

Two school records fell during the recent season and both were relays. The 200 freestyle relay team of Nick Tarpein (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, IA), Sweet, Jake Miller (Monmouth HS, Monmouth, IL) and Simcock recorded a time of 1:28.01 on the first day of the CCIW championship meet on February 8. That replaced the old record of 1:29.81 set in 1989 by the team of Pat Donovan, Dwight Pentzien, Rob Narske and Eric Keiter. The other new school record came in the 200 medley relay when the team of Miller, Tarpein,  Brandon Wold (Elk River HS, Elk River, MN) and Simcock swam 1:39.52 to take down the old record of 1:40.15 set in 1994 by the team of Brad Williams, Jeff Small, Scott Frech and Mike Orseno.
