2003-04 MEN’S SWIMMING REVIEW
Matt Simcock leads the way once again as Vikings finish year with 3-4 dual meet record and fifth place finish in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin
Senior sprint freestyle specialist Matt Simcock (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, IL) wrapped a fine career at Augustana College with his name sprinkled liberally throughout the school’s record book. Simcock, who won the 50 freestyle in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin as a sophomore, helped lead head coach Gary Ackerson’s team to a 3-4 dual meet record and a fifth place finish in the league.
During the course of the year the Vikings won the Augustana Invitational, took third in the North Central Invitational and had fifth place finishes in the Illinois Wesleyan and Grinnell Invitationals.
Through it all, Simcock was consistently the top scorer on the team. He finished the year with the best individual time in four events: 50 freestyle (:21.46), 100 freestyle (:47.21), 100 backstroke (:56.68) and 100 breaststroke (1:01.03). In addition he swam on four relay teams that ended up with the teams best times: 200 freestyle (1:27.56), 400 freestyle (3:12.97), 200 medley (1:39.84) and 400 medley (3:40.50).
When he graduates in May he leaves as the school record holder in three individual events and three relays. He set school marks in the 50 freestyle (:21.01), 100 freestyle (:46.86) and 100 backstroke (:53.59) during his junior year. As a sophomore he was a member of the 200 medley relay team that set a school record of 1:39.12 and as a junior he part of the 200 freestyle relay (1:25.35) and 400 freestyle relay (3:11.64) units that now hold school marks.
The Vikings wrapped up the 2003-04 men’s swimming season with a fifth place finish in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship meet. Wheaton won the title for the eighth straight time with 602 points. Carthage (584.5), Millikin (283.5) and Illinois Wesleyan (283) preceded the Vikings, who scored 190 points, in the standings. North Central occupied sixth place with 150 points.
