2007-08 MEN’S SWIMMING REVIEW

 

Vikings finish sixth at CCIW men’s swimming championship; swimmers win title at Eureka Invitational and defeat Knox and Principia in dual meets

 

ROCK ISLAND, Ill.The Vikings placed sixth at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championship meet under first year head coach Greg Naumann.  Augustana totaled 154.50 points at the three day event.  Carthage won the team crown with 1,025 points.  Wheaton was second with 742 points, Rose-Hulman was third with 521.50 points, Illinois Wesleyan was fourth with 365.50 points, Millikin was fifth with 232.50 points, and North Central rounded out the field in seventh with 101 points. 

 

Augustana relied heavily on its relay teams and the men came through, finishing sixth in four of the relay events.  Freshman Drew Clinton (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Brookfield, Ill.), sophomore Eric Zike (Ridgeview HS, Colfax, Ill.), junior Sam Higdon (Naperville Central HS, Bolingbrook, Ill.), and junior Dan Betz (DeKalb HS, DeKalb, Ill.) combined for a time of 1:30.96 in the 200 freestyle relay.  Clinton, Higdon, Zike, and Betz also completed the 400 freestyle relay with a clocking of 3:24.52.  Higdon, Clinton, Betz, and Zike finished the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:51.17. 

 

Junior Ian Gustafson (Rockford Jefferson HS, Cherry Valley, Ill.), freshman Brian Tuinenga (Glenbard South HS, Glen Ellyn, Ill.), freshman Derek Sanderson (Lincoln-Way East HS, Tinley Park, Ill.), and sophomore Jake Glimco (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) also got in on the action, posting a time of 8:21.17 in the 800 freestyle relay.  Betz turned in the highest individual finish for the Vikings, placing 11th in the 100 butterfly with a time of :54.26.

 

Augustana won the Eureka Invitational on January 26, defeating Principia (65 points), Illinois College (49), Eureka (30), and Knox (26).  The Vikings easily won the meet with 147 points and grabbed eight individual titles.  Zike was a triple winner, earning top finishes in the 100 backstroke (1:02.17), 50 backstroke (:27.96), and 100 individual medley (1:02.58).  Clinton won a pair of races, taking first place honors in the 50 freestyle (:23.50) and the 50 breaststroke (:33.02).  Gustafson, Glimco, and Betz also won individual events at the meet.  Gustafson was the champion in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:03.76.  Glimco hit the finish in :28.21 to take the title in the 50 butterfly.  Betz raced past the field to win the 100 butterfly with a clocking of 1:02.24.

 

The Vikings were 2-4 on the season in dual meets.  Augustana defeated Knox in its season opening dual, 73-40.  The swimmers also knocked off Principia 47-30 at a triangular later in the season.  The men finished second out of six teams at the North Central Invitational and second out of four squads at the Augustana Invitational.
