Augustana finishes fall season with second place finish at CCIW Championships; Danielle Detelich, Abbi Johnson, and Rachel Gahn place in top 10 at conference meet
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Augustana women’s golf team finished its fall season with a strong performance at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championships. The Vikings finished second at the CCIW Championships on Friday, October 6 and Saturday, October 7 at the Prairie Vista Golf Course in Bloomington, Illinois by shooting a team score of 681.
Danielle Detelich (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) led the team in her freshman season with a fifth place finish at the CCIW Championships. She led the field with a first round of 78 and shot a 166 for the two days, finishing tied for fifth. Detelich shot 17 rounds and finished tied with a team best scoring average of 84.9 strokes per round. Her low round of 78 came at the CCIW Championships. Detelich was the top finisher for the Vikings in nine events this season. She took home medalist honors at the Kohawk Fall Invitational (83) and the North Central Cardinal Classic (84). Detelich finished in the top five places five times in the fall and was a top 10 finisher in seven events.
Rachel Gahn (Edina HS, Edina, Minn.) turned in a great fall season in her sophomore campaign. Gahn ended the season with a ninth place finish at the CCIW Championships, shooting a 170 with two rounds of 85. She was tied on the team with a scoring average of 84.9 strokes per round. In her 16 rounds, Gahn compiled seven finishes in the top five and 10 finishes in the top 10. She was the medalist at the Monmouth Invitational, firing a season low round of 78, where the Vikings also set a new scoring record of 324 strokes in winning the 18 team tournament.
Abbi Johnson (Davenport Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) came on strong for the Vikings at the end of the fall season by finishing second on the team in the final two events. She shot rounds of 86 and 82 at the CCIW Championships to take home eighth place honors. Johnson finished her senior season with a scoring average of 88.1 in 18 rounds, third on the team. She fired season low rounds of 82 on the second day of the MU Red Tail Run Fall Classic and the CCIW Championships at the end of the season. Johnson earned two top five finishes and five top 10 finishes this year.
Brittany Hildebrand (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) was the fourth scoring golfer for Augustana at the CCIW Championships. She completed the fall of her senior season with rounds of 88 and 89 to finish in a tie for 14th place in the season finale. Hildebrand was fifth on the team in scoring average of 92.2 in her 13 rounds of play. Her low round of 86 came in the second round of the MU Red Tail Run Fall Classic. Hildebrand’s strongest finish of the season was 14th at the CCIW Championships.
Heather Arizpe (Conant HS, Schaumburg, Ill.) was fourth for the Vikings with a scoring average of 91.8 in 18 rounds. She was fifth for Augustana at the CCIW Championships, shooting rounds of 92 and 95 to finish in a tie for 23rd place. Arizpe recorded two top 10 finishes as a sophomore. Her season low round of 82 came in the first round of the Illinois Wesleyan Fall Golf Classic.
Megan McNulty (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) and Annie Young (St. Viator HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) were also contributors for the team. McNulty shot 14 rounds as a freshman and finished seventh on the team with a scoring average of 95.4. She produced three top 10 finishes, including a ninth place finish at the North Central Cardinal Classic. Young was sixth on the team in scoring average (94.6) in her senior season. She shot 12 rounds and earned one top 10 finish on the season.
Head coach Ron Standley’s Vikings competed in 11 events this fall, winning in record fashion at the Monmouth Invitational and defeating Coe (349-364) at the Kohawk Fall Invitational. Augustana made history at the 18 team Monmouth Invitational on Saturday, September 9 in Monmouth, Illinois. Gahn, Detelich, Arizpe, and Johnson combined to shoot a team score of 324. The score is a new school record, eclipsing the old mark of 327 set on September 21, 2003 by Megan Grevas (79), Theresa Wenzel (82), Josefin Holmberg (83) and Katie Clancy (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) (83). Gahn led the way with a 78, claiming medalist honors in the 97 player field. Detelich was close behind, firing an 80 and tying for second place. Arizpe and Johnson each shot 83 and finished in a tie for seventh.
The Vikings also participated in three meets during the spring season, placing second at the Augustana Invitational, third at the Hickory Point Open, and 13th against a tough field at the Illinois Wesleyan Spring Fling.
Augustana finished in second place at the Augustana Fall Classic, Fighting Bee Classic, and North Central Cardinal Classic. The team was third in the season opening tournament at the Robert Morris Fall Classic. Standley led the team to an overall record of 77-50 in invitationals this season.
