2004-05 WOMEN’S GOLF REVIEW

VIKINGS FINISH 2004 FALL SEASON WITH FOURTH PLACE FINISH IN COLLEGE CONFERENCE OF ILLINOIS & WISCONSIN

A consistent team effort throughout the season was the highlight for the 2004 Augustana College women’s golf team. Without a clearcut number one player of the type of previous standouts Josefin Holmberg or Kallie Daley, the Vikings had to rely on a trio of players to take up the slack. The Vikings of veteran head coach Ron Standley, now in his sixth year at the helm, had five players finish the year with scoring averages between 91.1 and 98.4.

Senior Theresa Wenzel (Benet Academy, Naperville, IL), one of just two players to see action in all 12 rounds, led the team in scoring in the 2004 fall season. She totaled 1,093 strokes over 12 rounds and wound up with an average of 91.1 and a low round of 84. She was followed closely by junior Michelle Coble (Peru St. Bede Academy, DePue, IL), the other player who performed in all 12 rounds. Coble had 1,103 strokes in those 12 rounds and had an average of 91.9. She had the lowest single round of the year with an 83 at the IWU Fall Classic. The third player who flirted with the top spot was sophomore Katie Clancy (York HS, Elmhurst, IL) who checked in with a 92.8 average after recording 1,021 strokes in 11 rounds. Her low score was 88 at the IWU Fall Classic. Those three took turns during the season leading the team in scoring average but four others played in at least 10 of the 12 rounds.

Sophomore Annie Young (St. Viator HS, Arlington Heights, IL) was fourth on the team in average with a mark of 97.8 thanks to 1,076 strokes over 11 rounds and senior Melissa Eckdahl (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, IL) had a 98.4 average with 1,084 strokes in 11 rounds. Sophomore Brittany Hildebrand (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, IL) finished the year with an average of 101.1 with 1,011 strokes in 10 rounds and sophomore Abbi Johnson (Davenport Assumption HS, Davenport, IA) checked in at 102.0 with 1,122 strokes in 11 rounds.

In all, the Vikings played in 10 matches during the season, finishing the year with a solid fourth place in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin. Illinois Wesleyan won the CCIW title for the third consecutive year with a score of 674 (336 338) while Carthage was second at 704 (355 349) and Wheaton took third with a 711 (360 351). Augustana was fourth with a 756 (389 367) thanks to a pair of top 20 individual finishes from Coble and Wenzel. Coble was 15^th in the tournament with a two day total of 183, shooting a 97 on Friday but coming back with an 86 on Saturday. Wenzel was 17^th with a score of 188 on rounds of 93 and 95.

The highest team finish came in the Fighting Bee Classic on September 25 when the Blue & Gold was fourth and the Augie Fall Classic when the Vikings took fifth. Johnson had the best individual finish of the year when she placed eighth in the same meet with a 91.
