2008-2009 Season - 2003-04 WOMEN'S GOLF REVIEW
2003-04 WOMEN’S GOLF REVIEW
MEGAN GREVAS AND JOSEFIN HOLMBERG BOTH FINIS H IN TOP 10 IN CCIW AS VIKINGS FINISH FOURTH; TEAM ESTABLISHES NEW SCHOOL RECORD TWICE IN SAME TOURNAMENT; GREVAS SETS INDI VIDUAL SCHOOL RECORD FOR LOW SEASON AVERAGE
Megan Grevas (Piedra Vista HS, Farmington, NM) and Josefin Holmberg (Oregon Davis HS, Walkerton, IN) led the 2003 edition of the Augustana College women’s golf team under the direction of head coach Ron Standley. It was a record breaking year for the Vikings, both individually and teamwise.
Grevas finished the year with a season low average 83.1, which established a new single season school record for lowest per round average, eclipsing the old mark of 83.5 set by Kallie Daly in 1999. Grevas had 748 strokes in nine rounds while Daly had 1,587 strokes in 19 rounds during a year in which she competed in the NCAA Division III national tournament. Grevas will actually have to wait until after the spring season to officially claim the school record because her average could go up or down depending on what kind of a spring she has. Holmberg also bettered Daly’s existing school record as she shot 83.3 with 833 strokes over 10 rounds.
Both players finished in the top 10 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin, which was hosted by Augustana at Emeis Golf Course in Davenport, Iowa on October 2-3. Grevas shot a two day score of 167 (81 86), which was good for sixth place while Holmberg finished seventh with a score of 170 (84 86). No other Vikings was in the top 20. As a team Augustana placed fourth with a total of 707 (354 353). Illinois Wesleyan won the team title with a fine total of 658 (337 321) while Carthage took second at 695 (347 348) with Wheaton placing third with a score of 702 (343 359).
The Vikings also established a new team record earlier in the year for lowest score over an 18 hole round. They actually did it not once but twice in the same tournament. On September 20 at the Illinois Wesleyan Fall Classic, which was played at Ironwood Country Club in Normal, Illinois, the team of Grevas (77), Holmberg (78), Brittany Hildebrand (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, IL) (87), and Michelle Coble (Peru St. Bede Academy, DePue, IL) (93) scored a collective 335 that broke the previous record of 343, which was set on September 22, 2002 at the same Illinois Wesleyan Invitational. The very next day – September 21 – the team of Grevas (79), Theresa Wenzel (Benet Academy, Naperville, IL) (82), Holmberg (83) and Katie Clancy (York HS, Elmhurst, IL) (83) lowered that mark again with a 327.
