Augustana women’s tennis team finishes third at CCIW Championships; Tricia Crawford and Jenna Richardson named to CCIW All-Conference team; Vikings finish 13-10 overall and earn first winning season since 2003-04

05/13/08 – The ROCK ISLAND, Ill. Augustana women’s tennis team finished the spring portion of its season with a 5-4 mark and concludes the year with a 13-10 overall record, the first winning season for the women’s tennis squad since 2003-04. The Vikings were 8-6 overall and 4-2 in the College Conference of Illinois and this past fall. The team also earned a third place finish at the CCIW Championships on October 5 and October 6 by compiling 37 points at the event. It is the highest finish for Wisconsin Augustana since the tea m took third in 2001. The Vikings had wins over Loras (7-2), Cornell (6-3), St. Ambrose (6-3), Millikin (8-1), Illinois Wesleyan (7-2), Monmouth (7-2), Elmhurst (9-0), and North Central (6-3) in the fall and earned victories against Villa Julie (8-1), Catholic (5-4), Juniata (9-0), St. Ambrose (6-3), and Monmouth (9-0) this spring. Augustana also competed in the CCIW Automatic Qualifier tournament, dropping a 9-0 decision to in the semi-final round. Carthage
Jenna Richardson ( Melrose Park Walther Lutheran HS, ) led the team with 18 singles wins this season, accumulating a total mark of 18-11. It is the second straight season that she has finished 18-11 in singles. After playing mostly in the third spot as a freshman, Bellwood, Ill. split her time between first and second singles last fall before taking over the number one singles spot in the spring. She defeated DeGrado of North Central and Lindsey Earhart of Millikin. Richardson fell to Richardson ’s Beth Kaufman in the semi-finals and to Sarah Rusch of Illinois Wesleyan in the third place match. She teamed with junior Alli Bernardi (Rockford Lutheran HS, Belvidere, Ill.) for a 4-5 mark at number two doubles this spring after finishing 6-8 with sophomore Carthage Kaitlin Kulovitz (Lincoln Way Central HS, New Lenox, Ill.) last fall. Richardson and Kulovitz placed third in the number two doubles flight at the CCIW Championships. The duo avenged an earlier loss to Kelly Hatch and Alicia DeGrado of North Central by defeating them in the third place match.
Bernardi was second on the team in singles victories with a record of 15-12. She started the season at number four singles before moving up to the third spot part way through the fall season. Bernardi made big strides after only playing in seven singles matches as a sophomore. She finished fourth in the number three singles flight at the CCIW Championships, defeating Margie Leahu of Elmhurst and Illinois Wesleyan’s Sarah Wilson. Bernardi dropped a semifinal match-up with
’s Brooke Parrish and lost to Allison Paschold of North Central in the third place match. Wheaton
Bernardi also led the team with 12 overall doubles wins. She played with freshman Audrey Yenchek (
Warrenville South HS, Wheaton ) and had a 6-2 mark in doubles in the fall. The tandem was 5-2 at the third spot and also had a victory against Wheaton, Ill. in the second position. They were seeded third at number three doubles for the CCIW Championships and beat Kristin Leninger and Lauren Hennessey of Elmhurst and second seeded Morgan and Kristina Roglin of Carthage in the semifinals. Bernardi and Yenchek held an early lead against Elmhurst ’s Brittney Dunn and Edwards, but fell in the final. Wheaton
Sophomores Tricia Crawford (Decorah HS,
) and Emily Doemland ( Decorah, Iowa Downers Grove South HS, ) played the entire season at number one doubles. They finished 9-18 overall; highlighted by a third place finish in the number one doubles flight at the UW-Whitewater Invitational where they defeated Debbie Braun and Sarah Schoenwaelder of UW-La Crosse in the third place match. At the CCIW Championships, the duo lost two exciting matches to Hook and Lindsey Hallett of Westmont, Ill. and to Alison Heim and Rusch of Illinois Wesleyan. Wheaton
Crawford, 9-15 overall, also rotated with
between the top two singles spots for the fall season, but played number one for all of the CCIW matches. She was 3-3 in the CCIW at first singles. After receiving a first round bye at the CCIW Championships, she fell to Jordan Hook of Richardson and Hatch of North Central. Wheaton
Doemland played the first part of the fall season in the third spot before settling in at fourth singles for the rest of the year. She finished with an overall mark of 13-13 and had a third place finish at the CCIW Championships. After receiving a first round bye, she fell to Dunn of Wheaton but rallied for wins over Illinois Wesleyan’s Cate Hunter and
’s Alex Stark to finish third for the Vikings. Elmhurst
Sheri Hendricks ( Warrenville South HS, Wheaton ) and Warrenville, Ill. Tricia Sapio ( HS, Barrington ) both made solid contributions at the varsity level and saw increased playing time during the spring season. The duo combined for a 6-7 mark in doubles, spending most of the time in the third slot, but also earning a win against Barrington, Ill. at number two doubles. Hendricks was 5-5 in singles, with a 5-3 mark at six singles and a 0-2 record in the fifth slot. Sapio was 5-7 overall and 0-1 at fourth singles, 2-6 at fifth singles, and 3-0 in the sixth position. Sophomore Rose Szczurek (Lemont HS, Lemont, Ill.) was 4-2 at number six singles and also earned a victory at number five singles this spring against Juniata. Freshmen Emily Zajda (
, Joliet Catholic Academy ) and Melyssa Kotecki (LaSalle-Peru HS, Plainfield, Ill. ) were 1-2 in the third doubles flight at the UW-Whitewater Invitational. Zajda was 4-0 in doubles action this spring, accumulating a 2-0 record with Hendricks, and a 1-0 record with Sapio and Doemland. LaSalle, Ill.
Kulovitz led the team with 12 singles wins this fall. She was 9-4 at number five singles and 12-7 overall. Kulovitz was the third seed at the CCIW Championships where she defeated Millikin’s Alyssa Napolitano and second seeded Ashley Morgan of Carthage before falling to Wheaton’s Kayli Edwards in the final.
Yenchek also had a great fall season in singles, playing primarily in the sixth position. She finished 8-3 and her only losses were to Justine Allen of Luther and twice to Sara Federschmidt of
. Yenchek, the third seed at the CCIW Championships, raced into the final with victories over Wheaton Tara Madziarek of North Central and ’s Julie Rendino. She fell to Federschmidt of Wheaton in the final. Carthage Augustana finishes the season with an overall record of 90-75 in singles and 42-45 in doubles. The team was 78-60 in singles in dual meets with a 25-11 record in CCIW matches. The Vikings finished 33-36 in doubles in dual matches and were 9-9 in CCIW meets.
