2008-09 Season - 2000-01 WOMEN'S TENNIS REVIEW

VIKINGS FINISH 2000 SEASON WITH 9-6 DUAL MEET RECORD

AND FOURTH PLACE IN COLLEGE CONFERENCE OF ILLINOIS & WISCONSIN

Veteran head coach Larry Flaherty was forced to overcome several obstacles during the 2000 season, the least of which was the fact that he played the year missing two of his top returning players. Margo Clarke (Chatham Glenwood HS, Chatham, IL) and Larisa Rumin (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, IL) both missed the fall portion of the season due to participation in the school's foreign academic quarter.

Despite that fact, the Vikings ended the season with a 9-6 overall dual meet record and a 4-3 mark in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin.  In the CCIW tournament, which was held on October 20-21 at the Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington, Illinois, Augustana placed fourth with 34 points. It was the 15th consecutive time that the Blue & Gold have finished in the top four in the CCIW.

At the CCIW Tournament, sophomore Margo Clarke (Chatham Glenwood HS, Chatham, IL) and junior Christine Spencer (Wheeling HS, Arlington Heights, IL) led the way with second place finishes in singles. Clarke was the runnerup at number three, losing in the championship match to Rachel Zorn of Wheaton by a score of 7-6; 6-2. Spencer was second at number four, falling to Nicole Tiberi of Illinois Wesleyan by a count of 7-5; 6-4 in the title match. Clarke finished the year 11-9 overall in singles while Spencer was 11-4.

Freshman Anne Schneck (Moline HS, Coal Valley, IL) placed third in the number five singles division with an 8-4 victory over Erika Herrin of Illinois Wesleyan. Schneck finished the season with the most victories for the Vikings as she was 15-4.

Sophomore Ashley Dethloff (Pekin HS, Pekin, IL) placed fourth at number two singles and was 10-8 for the year while sophomore Brijan Knapp (Urbana HS, Urbana, IL) finished fourth at number six singles and had a 9-8 record.

Flaherty finished his ninth season at Augustana and he is the winningest coach in school history with an overall record of  131-51 (.719).
