2009 Season - 2001 WOMEN'S SOCCER REVIEW

IN FIRST YEAR UNDER SCOTT MEJIA VIKINGS FINISH 10-10 OVERALL WITH KENDRA PETRIE & GRETCHEN MAHER GAINING MVP HONORS

It took a little time for the Augustana Vikings women's soccer team to get used to the new style of play implemented by first year head coach Scott Mejia. Once they caught on, however, the Vikings were able to accomplish quite a lot in Mejia's first campaign. Through the first seven matches, Augustana could manage just two victories and had been outscored 19-6.

It was in that seventh match, however, a 1-0 loss on September 16 to an Illinois Wesleyan team that would finish the season at 14-4, that seemed to turn things around. From that point on the Vikings won eight of their final 13 to finish the year with a 10-10 overall record and a 3-4 mark in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin. After giving up 19 goals in the first seven games, Mejia's team only allowed 17 goals over the final 13.

In fact, Augustana won five of the final seven games of the season, starting with a 4-0 shutout at Knox on October 7. That was followed with 2-1 home win against North Central on Homecoming Saturday, October 13. Less than 24 hours the Vikings beat Rockford 2-1 in Rockford, Illinois and then on October 21 tossed a shutout at Benedictine by a score of 2-0. Carthage stopped that four match winning streak by a score of 1-0 on October 22 and Elmhurst beat the Blue & Gold 3-1 on October 26 but the season ended on a high note with a 2-0 triumph over Millikin on October 31 in Decatur.

Kendra Petrie (Cary Grove HS, Cary, IL) was selected as the team's Most Valuable Offensive Player and with good reason. She led the team in both goals scored and total points. She nailed nine goals and coupled that with three assists for 21 total points.

Gretchen Maher (Crystal Lake Central HS, Crystal Lake, IL) was tabbed as the Most Valuable Defensive Player. She lent stability in the back row as the Vikings were adjusting to the new system. Maher was selected as the team's MVP during her freshman year of 1998 and was named the winner of the Best Energy award in her junior season of 2000. The Newcomer of the Year was freshman Eve Palmer (Martin Luther HS, New Berlin, WI) while Jenny Latas (Fenton HS, Bensenville, IL) was named Most Improved Player. Palmer scored four goals and had four assists for 12 total points and was the fourth leading scorer on the team. Latas was the third leading scorer with six goals and two assists for 14 points.

Senior goalkeeper Carla Wagner (Fremd HS, Palatine, IL) was the lone Augustana player to be named to the all-conference team in the CCIW, making the first team. During the 2001 season Wagner played and started in 20 games and had 124 saves while giving up 35 goals for a 1.76 goals-against-average. She ends her career with several school records, including single season victories for goalies (11 in 1998 and 1999), career shutouts (14), career saves (437), career starts (74) and career games played (74).

The 10 victories for the Vikings marks the sixth time in the history of the program (which began in 1993) that they have finished the year with at least 10 wins.

Petrie now has 16 goals after two seasons and she is in fourth place on the school's all-time goal scoring list. Her 38 points places her sixth on the total points list. Meredith Moss (Quincy Notre Dame HS, Quincy, IL) finished her junior year tied with Petrie on the career goals list with 16 and she is fifth in total points with 42. Her 10 career assists is tied for sixth on that list.
