2009 Season - 2007 MEN'S SOCCER REVIEW
Vikings secure 13th straight winning season in men’s soccer with 8-7-3 mark under first year head coach Brenton Joseph; Scott Marlega and Petar Tomicic named to CCIW All-Conference team
The Augustana men’s soccer team finished its 13th season in a row with a winning record after ending the 2007 campaign with a mark of 8-7-3. The Vikings were sixth in the College of Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin regular season standings, compiling a 2-4-1 record. The Vikings clinched a winning season with a 3-0 victory over Beloit in the final game of the season. Augustana has not had a losing season since 1994 when the team finished 7-10-3.
Senior forward Scott Marlega (Conant HS, Elk Grove, Ill.) led the team with 18 points. He was the team leader with seven goals and four assists. Junior midfielder Dan Hogan (Wheaton North HS, Wheaton, Ill.) was the second Viking to finish the year in double figures. He was second on the team with five goals and also added two assists for a total of 12 points.
Sophomore defender Dave Shrigley (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) was third on the team with nine points. He was third on the team with four goals and also added one assist. Senior midfielder Matt Young (Lincoln Way Central HS, Manhattan, Ill.) and senior forward Cary Lucibello (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.) each scored six points on two goals and two assists.
Senior midfielder/forward Nick Cosentino (Conant HS, Elk Grove Village, Ill.), sophomore midfielder Scott Wallner (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.), sophomore midfielder Alex Rathe (Lake Zurich HS, Deer Park, Ill.), freshman midfielder Adrian Navar (Morton HS, Berwyn, Ill.), and sophomore midfielder Andrew Stanley (Harlem HS, Roscoe, Ill.) each tallied five points. Senior defender Kurt Albrecht (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) scored three points while freshman midfielder Greg Maggio (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.), sophomore midfielder Nikolas Galounis (Lincoln Way Central HS, New Lenox, Ill.), and sophomore defender John Linden (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) each finished with two points.
Sophomore Michael Dolan (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) played in 13 games as a goalkeeper, making 37 saves and only allowing 13 goals. He finished with a record of 5-4-2 with three shutouts. Sophomore Nathan Jensch (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) also saw significant time in net, playing in eight contests. He made 23 saves and only allowed 10 goals. Jensch had a record of 3-3-1 with one shutout. Freshman Tom Marsden (Grayslake HS, Grayslake, Ill.) played in two games as a goalkeeper, making one save in limited action.
The Vikings opened the season under first year head coach Brenton Joseph with a (0-0) double overtime tie against Concordia of Chicago. The team won its next two games, defeating Marian (3-1) and knocking off Maryville (2-0). After a (2-0) loss to Luther, Augustana defeated UW-Platteville (2-1) and played to a (0-0) double overtime tie with a ranked Wartburg squad. A three match winning streak late in the season helped the Vikings get out of a 4-5-3 hole. The team defeated Knox (8-0), Illinois Wesleyan (3-1), and Millikin (4-0) to improve to 7-5-3. With a 7-7-3 mark heading into the final game of the season against Beloit, the Vikings came through again with a (3-0) shutout win to extend its winning season streak to 13th straight years.
The Vikings finished the 2007 campaign outscoring opponents 33-23, including a 19-12 advantage in the first half. Augustana also held a large edge in shots, attempting 287 to only 177 for the opposition. The Vikings finished with 85 corner kicks and allowed 55 on the season. The goalkeepers combined for a goals against average of 1.77 with 107 total saves.
Head coach Brenton Joseph finished his first season with an overall record of 8-7-3 with a 2-4-1 mark in the CCIW.
