2009 Season - 2006 MEN'S SOCCER REVIEW
Augustana earns 12th straight winning season with
10-9-0 mark in 2006; Vikings finish fourth in CCIW and advance to tournament championship – The Augustana men’s soccer team finished its 12th season in a row with a winning record after ending the 2006 campaign with a mark of ROCK ISLAND, Ill. 10-9-0. The Vikings were fourth in the of College of Conference and Illinois regular season standings, compiling a Wisconsin 4-3-0 record. The ten wins are the highest since 2003 when the Vikings were 13-6-1. Augustana has not had a losing season since 1994 when the team finished 7-10-3.
Junior forward Nick Cosentino (Conant HS,
) and fifth year senior forward Brad Becker ( Elk Grove Village, Ill. North HS, Naperville ) led the team with 13 points on the season. Cosentino scored a team high six goals and earned one assist. He will enter his senior year 19 goals, four assists, and 42 total points. Cosentino scored a career high eight goals in his sophomore season. Becker finished his career with five goals and three assists in his last season. He is currently in 7th place on the all-time top ten rankings for goals (38) and points (90). Naperville, Ill.
Junior midfielder Matt Meyer (
Schaumburg HS, ) was the third Viking to finish the season in double figures. He contributed two goals and led the team with six assists. Other top point scorers included junior forward Schaumburg, Ill. Scott Marlega (Conant HS, ) with eights points on four goals, junior forward Cary Lucibello ( Elk Grove, Ill. North HS, Naperville ) with seven points on three goals and an assist, and freshman midfielder Naperville, Ill. Scott Wallner ( Buffalo Grove HS, ) with six points on two goals and two assists. Senior midfielder Marcus Harris (McHenry East HS, Arlington Heights, Ill. ) scored five points with two goals and one assist and senior midfielder Dylan DeGrave (Fremd HS, McHenry, Ill. ) had a goal and two assists, finishing with four points. Dan Hogan ( Palatine, Ill. North HS, Wheaton ), Petar Tomicic ( Wheaton, Ill. Buffalo Grove HS, ), Joe Caruso (Fremd HS, Arlington Heights, Ill. ), Matt Young ( Palatine, Ill. Lincoln Way Central HS, ), Kurt Albrecht ( Manhattan, Ill. Buffalo Grove HS, ), and Justin Ross ( Arlington Heights, Ill. St. Viator HS, ) also scored a goal for Augustana. Elk Grove, Ill.
The Vikings began the season with a 1-0 victory at home over Clarke. The Vikings were
5-3-0 at Ericson Field in for the season. After winning 4-1 at Ripon, the Vikings dropped the next three contests, falling to 2-3. The team rebounded with its highest offensive output of the year, scoring seven goals in a 7-1 win at North Central, opening CCIW action at 1-0. After dropping a one goal decision to Rock Island, Illinois in the following contest, the Vikings went on a five match winning streak. During the run of success, Augustana outscored the opposition 6-1 and came away with four straight shutouts. Freshman goalkeeper Michael Dolan ( Chicago Libertyville HS, ) was credited with the first three, all 1-0 wins for the Vikings, before sophomore goalkeeper Albert Greenhut ( Libertyville, Ill. Deerfield HS, ) stepped to notch the fourth straight 1-0 win for Augustana. Deerfield, Ill.
Sitting at 8-4 overall with a 4-0 record in the CCIW, the rollercoaster season continued with a four match losing streak before the team again rebounded. Entering its last regular season match with an 8-8 record, the Viking offense exploded again, this time scoring six goals in a 6-2 win over Luther in the final home game of the season. Augustana scored early and often, building a 4-0 advantage in the first 15 minutes of play and leading 6-0 at intermission.
4-3-0 finish in the CCIW earned the team a berth in the CCIW tournament as the fourth seed. Augustana last qualified for the postseason tournament in 2003, advancing past North Park in penalty kicks before dropping the title game to . The Vikings traveled to Wheaton for a semi-final encounter with top-seeded Chicago, Illinois North Park. North Park defeated Augustana 2-1 during the regular season and was ranked as high as 13th in the nation. The Vikings of Rock Island responded with a thrilling win, defeating North Park 1-0 on a goal by Marlega and advancing to the title game against . The Vikings fell 3-0, missing a bid to the NCAA Division III tournament by one game and finishing at Wheaton 10-9-0.
Augustana’s signature win of the regular season came on Tuesday, October 3 in a home contest against
. Cosentino scored the game winner as the Vikings defeated the Thunder 1-0, the first time in school history that the Augustana men’s soccer program had defeated Wheaton . Wheaton
The Vikings finished the 2006 campaign outscoring opponents 31-26, including a 19-10 advantage in the first half. Augustana also held a large edge in shots, attempting 333 to only 220 for the opposition. The Vikings finished with 82 corner kicks and allowed 68 on the season. Dolan played in 18 games and only allowed 24 goals, a 1.42 average. He was credited with 86 saves and earned four shutouts. Greenhut was in goal for five matches and finished with a 0.96 goals against average after only two goals. He made four saves and had one shutout.
Scott Mejia finished his sixth season with the Vikings and has a 68-35-6 overall record and a 22-14-3 mark in the CCIW. Mejia’s overall coaching record of 79-62-8 includes two years at . Lakeland College
