2009 Season - 2000 MEN'S SOCCER REVIEW
ARIC SACKS NAMED MOST VALUABLE PLAYER
AS VIKINGS FINISH 2000 WITH 11-6-3 RECORD
Senior defender Aric Sacks (Schaumburg HS, Schaumburg, IL) has been selected as the Most Valuable Player for the Augustana College men's soccer team during the 2000 season. Sacks, a four year regular for the Vikings of veteran head coach Bob Estabrook, was one of the mainstays on a defense that was nothing short of spectacular in the second half of the season.
Augustana finished the season with an 11-6-3 overall record and a 3-1-2 mark in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin, good for third place in the league. It was the sixth straight year that the Vikings won at least 10 matches and the 16th time in the last 19 seasons they have posted double digits in victories.
Defense was the key to the success of the 2000 Viking squad. Opponents only scored 22 goals in 20 matches and 10 of those came in the first four games of the season. In the final 16 matches, the Blue & Gold defenders only allowed 12 goals, an average of 0.75 per game. There was a six game stretch in October where Augustana did not allow a goal as the Vikings recorded six consecutive shutouts. In all, they blanked eight opponents during the season, including Wheaton (0-0 tie), the NCAA Division III runner-up from a year ago.
Sacks scored just one goal on the season and he took only eight shots, but his value as a defender was obviously well thought by his teammates who selected him as the MVP. When the defense took charge just past the midway point of the season, the Vikings went 7-1-2 in the final 10 games of the year.
The Most Valuable Newcomer award went to freshman goalkeeper Rob Kramer (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, IL). Kramer shared the goaltending duties with sophomore Anthony Ewing (Conant HS, Schaumburg, IL) and both were tremendous. Kramer started 10 matches and had 52 saves while allowing just 11 goals and compiling a 0.91 goals-against-average. He led the CCIW in goals-against-average as he had a mark of 0.30 in league games. Ewing, the starter as a freshman, got the starting nod in 10 matches, recorded 55 saves, allowed 11 goals and had a G.A.A. of 0.97. Ewing finished fourth in the CCIW in G.A.A. at 0.57 in conference contests.
Sophomore Brandon Vahl (Waukegan HS, Lindenhurst, IL) was tabbed as the Best Offensive Player. Vahl was third on the team in scoring with four goals and four assists for 12 points.
When the all-conference team was announced, four Augustana players were named to the second team. Kramer, Sacks and seniors Chris Payton (West Chicago HS, West Chicago, IL) and Tyson Crist (Peoria Richwoods HS, Peoria, IL).
Crist led the team in scoring for the second year in a row with 25 total points on nine goals and seven assists. After setting a school record with 20 goals during his junior season, Crist did not quite manage that total this year but he still ended up as one of the highest scorers in school history. He finished tied for third in career goals with 48, fifth in assists with 21 and fourth in total points with 117.
The goal scoring lead actually belonged to freshman Jeremy Delgado (Lake Geneva Badger HS, Burlington, WI) with 10 goals, one more than Crist. Delgado had two assists and ended up second in the total points race with 22.
Bob Estabrook, the winningest coach in Augustana men's soccer history, finished his seventh season with a record of 82-45-10. He has a record of 22-15-4 in CCIW games.
