2009 Season - 2006 WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY REVIEW

Liz Driscoll earns MVP honors for Vikings women’s cross country team in 2006

 

Junior Liz Driscoll (Lyons Township HS, LaGrange Park, Ill.) was a model of consistency for the 2006 Augustana Vikings women’s cross country team. She was the Vikings number one runner in all seven of the meets she ran in this year. She sat out two competitions (the Carl Sandburg Invitational on September 30 in Galesburg, Illinois and the Millikin Invitational on October 13 in Decatur, Illinois).  In the seven she did run in she compiled a fine record.

 

From the very first meet of the year, when she won the Augustana Open on September 1 with a time of 24:07 over four miles to the last, when she placed 37th in the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional, Driscoll was consistently near the front of every race. She took seventh in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship with a time of 23:24 over 6,000 meters. During the course of the year she had a first place finish in the Coe Invitational, a fifth at the Whitewater Invitational, sixth at the Les Duke Invitational and a 25th in the Brissman/Lundeen Invitational. It is no surprise that she was named the team’s Most Valuable Performer.

 

In the meets where Driscoll did not compete, the Vikings did have people who were able to step up. Senior Jenna McAdam (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) won the Carl Sandburg Invitational on September 30 at Lake Storey Park in Galesburg, Illinois with a time of 19:12 and junior Melissa Engel (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) took fourth at the Millikin Invitational on October 13 in Decatur, Illinois.

 

Augustana had best team finishes of thirds at the Carl Sandburg Invitational, Lamb/Kohawk Invitational and Millikin Invitational. The Vikings were fourth at the Les Duke Invitational, Whitewater D-III Challenge and the CCIW Championship.

 

The Most Improved Runner award was shared by juniors Carmen Carrizales (St. Ignatius HS, Chicago, Ill.) and Nikki Rohner (Hinsdale South HS, Burr Ridge, Ill.).

 

Ellen Adams (Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn, Ill.), Krystal Daminano (Cary Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) and Jillian Rigert (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) were the winners of the Most Valuable Freshman honor.

 

There were co-winners of the Viking award and it went to seniors Karen Clauson (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) and McAdam.

 

McAdam was honored for her role as the captain of the 2006 team and the 2007 captains-elect are current juniors Driscoll and Engel.
