2009 Season - 2003 WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY REVIEW
Jennifer Paul named team MVP once again for Vikings
The name may have changed but the results surely didn’t and because of that senior Jennifer Paul (Davenport North HS, Davenport, IA) has been named the Most Valuable Performer of the Augustana College women’s cross country team for the second year in a row. For the first three years of her college career she performed under the name of Jennifer Smith before getting married over the summer to Jeff Paul, a former letterwinner on the Vikings men’s cross country team. Whatever the name, it didn’t slow her down as she was the unquestioned leader of the Augustana team all-season long.
Paul was the number one runner in seven of the nine meets. She won the Augustana Open way back on September 5, the first meet of the year and followed that with a 12th place finish in the Luther Invitational on September 12 and a seventh in the 21 team Brissman/Lundeen Invitational on September 26. She also had top 15 individual performances in the Dan Huston Invitational (14th) on October 10 and the Wisconsin-Oshkosh Invitational (11th) on October 18. She finished the season by being the Vikings top performer in the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional with a 47th place finish.
It was a fitting wrap-up for her career. She was the Most Valuable Freshman in 2000 and won the Erica Vortman “Viking Award” as a sophomore in 2001. She also served as team captain this past fall.
Stephanie McHone (Crystal Lake South HS, Crystal Lake, IL) was awarded the Most Valuable Freshman honor. She was one of the top runners all year long and in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin meet she led the Vikings with a 10th place finish in a time of 23:38. She placed 10th in the Brissman/Lundeen Invitational and was generally the number two runner on the team for most of the season.
The Most Improved Runner award was split three ways as Laura Davis (Rockton Hononegah HS, Rockton, IL), Maribeth Hoff (Lincoln Way HS, New Lenox, IL) and Liz Yemm (Sterling HS, Sterling, IL) shared the honor. The Erica Vortman Vikings Award was given jointly to Jessica Corvo (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, IL), Laurie Morgenthal (Wheeling HS, Wheeling, IL), Melanie Round (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, IL) and Yemm. Erin Marciniec (Benet Academy, Plainfield, IL) was selected to serve as team captain for the 2004 season.
Once again the Vikings of co-head coaches Fred Whiteside and Doug Sand turned in an outstanding season. They placed third in the CCIW, just 11 points shy of winning the seventh conference team championship in school history. McHone led the way in the CCIW meet with her 10th place finish with Round taking 11th, Paul 14th and Morgenthal 16th, giving Augustana four runners in the top 16. Wheaton and Elmhurst tied for the team title with 69 points each.
The Vikings placed second in the 21 team Brissman/Lundeen Invitational, fourth at the Wisconsin-Oshkosh Invitational and sixth in the Luther Invitational. The season ended on November 15th with a 12th place finish in the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional in Colfax, Wisconsin.
