2009 Season - 2004 WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY REVIEW
ERIN MARCINIEC WINS MVP HONORS FOR THE VIKINGS IN 2004 SEASON; AUGUSTANA ENDS YEAR FIFTH IN COLLEGE CONFERENCE OF ILLINOIS & WISCONSIN
Senior Erin Marciniec (Benet Academy, Plainfield, IL) has been selected as the Most Valuable Performer for the 2004 Augustana College women’s cross country team. Marciniec, who also served as the team captain, was a four year varsity letterwinner. She was the team’s Most Valuable Freshman back in 2001 and this past fall she was the number one runner in six meets.
Marciniec placed eighth in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship on October 30 as she led the Vikings to a fifth place team finish. She also placed fifth in the Loras Invitational on October 16 and was 11th at the Dan Huston Invitational on October 9.
Senior Anna Denton (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, IL) and sophomores Laura Meyer (Rockton Hononegah HS, Roscoe, IL) and Karen Clauson (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, IL) shared the Most Improved Runner honor. Denton ran in the top five in six meets this year while Meyer was the number one finisher for the Vikings in three invitationals. Clauson earned her first varsity letter and was the team’s fifth runner in the CCIW meet.
Sara Beatty (Willowbrook HS, Lombard, IL) grabbed the Most Valuable Freshman award and the Erica Vortman “Viking Spirit Award” went to sophomore Stephanie McHone (Crystal Lake South HS, Crystal Lake, IL). Beatty ran in six meets this past fall and was in the top seven in all of them. McHone got a late start on the 2004 season due to a stress fracture. She did not run her first race until October 9 but she ended up as the third runner in the last two meets.
Juniors Angie Morgenthal (Wheeling HS, Wheeling, IL) and Marie Reimers (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, IL) and McHone, a sophomore, were elected to be captains for the 2005 Augustana team.
Under the direction of head coach Fred Whiteside, Augustana was second in the Loras Invitational, fifth in the CCIW, sixth in the Dan Huston Invitational, 10th at the Brissman/Lundeen Invitational and 14th in the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional.
