2009 Season - 2006 Men's Cross Country Review
Vikings place second in CCIW; Tim Frey and Jeff Bailey both finish in top 10 individually; Augustana wins Brissman/Lundeen Invitational for fourth straight year
The Augustana Vikings men’s cross country spent the majority of the 2006 season ranked in the top 25 of the national NCAA Division III poll. Veteran head coach Paul Olsen was enjoying his 41st year at the helm of the school’s cross country fortunes and once again the Vikings turned in some impressive results.
With seniors Tim Frey (Hersey HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) and Jeff Bailey (Deerfield HS, Deerfield, Ill.) both finishing in the top 10, Augustana placed second in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin. It was the 24th time in Olsen’s career and the fourth time in the last five years that Augustana occupied the runner-up spot in the conference.
The CCIW meet was held on October 28 at Hickory Point Golf Course in Decatur, Illinois and Frey placed sixth with a time of 26:04.57 while Bailey took eighth in 26:10.05. The individual winner was North Central sophomore Nathaniel Hird, who covered the 8,000 meter course in a time of 25:22.62. North Central won the team title with 37 points while the Vikings were a solid second with 64 and Wheaton took third with 71.
The Vikings won the Brissman/Lundeen Invitational for the fourth straight year as junior Dan Leonard (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) led the way with a fourth place finish in 25:32. In the Brissman/Lundeen win, Augustana showed impressive grouping as it scored 68 points to win the 39 team field with Wisconsin-Stevens Point taking second with 82 points and Chicago placing third with 118. Bailey was seventh in the meet with a time of 25:49.
They were also second in the Luther Invitational with Leonard leading the way with a fourth place time of 20:53 over the four mile course. A sixth place finish in the Wisconsin-Oshkosh Invitational was also an impressive mark on the team’s resume in 2006. Over the weekend of September 30 the Vikings showed their depth as the varsity claimed a solid 11th at the Notre Dame Invitational and a junior varsity squad, fueled by Brian Hart’s (University City HS, St. Louis, Missouri) individual victory with a time of 28:09, won the team title with 19 points by stuffing five finishers in the top six spots.
After starting the season ranked 28th in NCAA Division III, Augustana made a steady climb up the polls, finally reaching a high of 19th prior to the Midwest Regional.
Frey was named the team’s MVP at the end of the season after putting together a tremendous senior season, culminating with his two best races. He placed sixth in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship on October 28 in Decatur, Illinois with a time of 26:04 over 8,000 meters and then finished the year with a 25th in the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional on November 11 at Credit Island in Davenport, Iowa when he recorded a time of 25:31. During the course of the season he was also 12th at the Luther Invitational in Decorah, Iowa on September 9 and 15th at the Brissman/Lundeen Invitational at Credit Island on September 22.
Dan Bailey (Deerfield HS, Deerfield, Ill.) and Chris Zook (Normal Community HS, Normal, Ill.) shared the Most Valuable Freshman honor. Bailey got off to a good start in his collegiate career when he won his first ever race, the Augustana Open on September 1 with a time of 21:32 over four miles at Credit Island. He was 18th at the Luther Invitational, 20th at the Brissman/Lundeen Invitational and 20th in the CCIW meet. Zook worked his way into the top seven and was 19th in the CCIW and 51st in the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional when he was the Vikings’ second man. He took third at the Carl Sandburg Invitational on September 30.
Frey and Leonard were co-winners of the Most Inspirational Award. Leonard was the team’s number one runner in two meets early in the year when he took fourth in the Luther Invitational and fifth in the Brissman/Lundeen Invitational.
The Most Improved Runner went to Kenny Slocum (Pleasant Valley HS, LeClaire, Iowa). He forged his way into the top seven this year and was 24th in the CCIW and was the team’s third man at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional with a 57th place finish and a time of 26:01.
Seniors Jeff Bailey, Tony Clavio (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) and Frey were honored for their roles as captains in 2006 and current juniors Brad Holehan (Joliet Catholic HS, Shorewood, Ill.), Leonard and Josh Sharko (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) were named captains for the 2007 season.
