Service-Learning
The Center for Vocational Reflection supports the development of academic service-learning at Augustana College. Service-learning is a teaching method that enriches learning by engaging students in service to their communities through careful integration with established academic disciplines. Service-learning invites students to meet authentic community need and includes intentional reflection on the service activity and celebration with the community partners. The Center for Vocational Reflection works with both Academic Departments and co-curricular areas at Augustana to encourage reflection on service as a way for students to understand more fully their own vocation in the community.
How does service-learning differ from community service or volunteering?
Community service is volunteer action taken to meet the needs of others and better the community as a whole. Service-learning is integrated into and enhances the academic curriculum of students engaged in service, or the educational components of the community service program in which the participants are enrolled. Service-learning provides structured time for thoughtful planning of the service project and guided reflection by participants on the service experience. Overall, the most important feature of effective service-learning programs is that both learning and service are emphasized. (Learn & Serve Clearinghouse)
